more to do with the beast that Benn could be at times, he could raise his game substantially. Something was not right in the mans head back then. I have to concede though that without the brain injury, McC would have won the fight, so I am slightly self contradictory there lol. I am pretty sure that Benn would beat each man once, although I am also sure that he would lose a rematch and rubber match. To extend that Best of 3 analogy to Calzaghe v McClennan, the nature of Calzaghe would prevent it happening. If Cal did beat Gman, he wouldnt take the risk of a rematch or rubber match because once he realises he made the mistake of taking on the G, he never takes that risk again because he wants to stay unbeaten (hence Hopkins rebuff). So there wouldnt be a best of 3 between them. I am basing my decision Cal (55%), G (45%) chances of winning on the basis that Cal takes the fight in Wales with a typically supportive ref, because he wouldnt face Gman anywhere else.
I believe this as well. Plus add to that the ****** frog ref that kept pushing Gerald back when Gerald wanted to go in for the kill in the first round. The British commentators acknowledged this too.
What's more is if that fight was held any other night it would have been stopped in the first. The ref did everything in his power to give benn time to recoup.
Calslappy probably gets decapitated in this fight by round 4 or 5. Would be pretty vicious stuff by G-Man.
Yup got the agree Benn should've been counted out in the first round. He did give the fight of his life against Mcclellen got to give him credit for that but if it wasn't for the injury Mcclellen would have won that fight.
I think McClellan is being undersold a bit here. He was an absolute monster at his best, and few fighters from that era at 160-168 would have survived his early rounds onslaught. On that fateful night against Benn he had the misfortune of an incompetent ref, a white-hot atmosphere, and most importantly an inspired opponent. 9 times out of 10, I'd fancy him to beat Benn. Putting Calzaghe's chin/recovery in perspective, McClellan is on a completely different level from the Byron Mitchells of this world, both in terms of ability and punching power. Calzaghe could be reckless, and was far from unhittable. His greatest strengths, his workrate and ability to adapt, would only become a factor if he got to the later rounds. He would have been a very live underdog against Jones had the fight happened, and considering that Jones was significantly better than Calzaghe, in crude terms that gives him a very good shot in this one.
tough match up for calzaghe imo, i think prime mcclellan stands a good chance of knocking any fighter out.
G man used walk around 190lbs he used to cut weight. U can see y he used to beable to bang. Would not be surprised if he hit as hard as some of the top cruserweights.
Gman has a fair chance of a KO, if he doesnt do it early id fancy Joe to take over and win a close decision.
