Gerald's family to sell world title belt.

GERALD McCLELLAN is selling his world title belt so he does not have to spend the rest of his life in a care home.
The former WBC world middleweight champion, 44, gets round-the-clock care from his sister Lisa after he was left brain damaged following an epic bout with Nigel Benn in 1995.

Now the McClellan family need funds so they can adapt their house to his changing needs and pay for any additional nursing.

The G-Man, who is blind, 80 per cent deaf and speaks with great difficulty, knows the hardship his relatives face and he told Lisa: "Sister just do what you've gotta do."

Lisa said: "The last thing our family want is for Gerald to go into a care home.

"We want to carry on looking after him at home but the cost is ever increasing. We have no option other than auction the WBC belt."

A fund-raising dinner in London organised by agent Kevin Lueshing helped stave off a cash crisis four years ago — but a chunk of that went to the US tax man.

Lueshing, who is taking offers for the belt, said: "Gerald can only walk a few steps and his memory span is about 20 seconds. But he's still there."

ITV are screening McClellan's tragic story on Monday at 10.35pm.

Buncey claimed that he has seen fake belts go for £20,000 read it that what you will.

this belt is legit though.

 

It's a material possession. Sell it all. Your well being is much more important at this stage.

 

Sad but Achilles is right.

 

He who must not be named has actually contributed a fair bit already to the McClellans. Sell the belt at the end of the day nobody can take away the fact he was a champion from him.

i know it is a belt and it's material but i find it sad that with the amount of money floating around in boxing a man who lost his quality of life in the ring entertaining us has to sell something he worked so hard for and in the end nearly gave his life for.
it been reported many times that he has been in finacial difficulties and he has kept the belt this long so it must be precious to him, i hope somebody somewhere helps him out.

 

Ive seen them go for £50 so whoever bought it must be a right mug.

Hopefully some super rich boxing fan will buy it and put it in a local museum or something like that. Not a fan of McClellan but I think the guy has payed way more than he deserved and hopefully gets to live at home as best and happily as he is capable of.
