You don't have to displace one of these guys to get into the top 10 in the 80s, indeed C00ney got to #2 without beating anybody who was ranked.

I think after losing Holmes, getting destroyed by Shavers and rebounding with two horrible performances he could have lost on points to Ledoux and Cobb..he was still somehow rated in the lower top 10 by Ring....cuz it was such a strong era and all.

Ok, here's how this goes down.

Mathews management puts up more money and secures him a fight with Ken Norton..fresh off his amazing SD win over Ty Cobb.

Matthews dazzles his way to a UD over the muscular Mandingo in a sold out west coast arena. King immediately begins hyping Matthews vs Holmes as the battle to finally decide who is the superior race?

So now C00ey is out of options..and gasp, may have to do the unthinkable and fight other young contenders. White ones at that.

Roland LaStarza is up first. He shows up drunk after partying all night at a Roadhouse, banging redneck girls, his vice of his choice. C00ney is told the Irish Race depends on him to show this Italian Redneck who's the superior white minority. C00ney knocks LaStarza down three times, and stops him on cuts in the mid rounds.

LaStarza's camp protests the stoppage and a rematch is ordered. LaStarza pretends C00ney is Marciano during training and shows up in incredible shape. LaStarza gets knocked down two times but puts on a masterful technical display during the rest of the fight, dropping C00ney in the late rounds, and a winning a decision.

Because a third LaStarza match may prove something, LaStarza declines and C00ney is pared off with Rex Layne. Layne sucks up a C00ney assualt, gets cut up, but gets off the canvas and wins a rough decision that ref Dempsey scored 3 rounds to 2, 5 even.

Laynes camp decide to rematch C00ney in a month, before his cuts can even heal. Layne's people decide to send on him on a bus tour for 3 weeks. Layne swells up in weight being unable to train. C00ney knocks Layne out cold in the second round, after being rocked in the first. Size conquers all fans rejoice.

C00ney is matched up next with Kockell. Depressed that a title shot is so far away, C00ney starts doing coke. Kockell is fighting for pure blooded Englishmen everywhere(not no damn Brits) and comes out walking through everything thrown at him. Kockell goes down multiple times but keeps rising up. C00ney in need of a coke fix crashes in the late rounds, and Kockell stands tall. King immediately makes Kockell vs Holmes...finally, who is the superior English speaking nation?

C00ney is next paired with Matthews, coming off a humilating 3 round TKO loss to Holmes. Nobody cares who wins. C00ney retires.

You still haven't grasped the nettle.
My point is the 70's /80's was a much stronger era. Those that were ranked in the 50's,[ ie those in the thread ,]would probably not be ranked in the 70's/80's!

I could but that the 70s were a stronger era, but I can't really buy that of the 80s.

The fact that the top contenders of the early 80s, were ageing guys who made up the B team of the 70s, tells you all you need to know.

The fact that the four best challengers of the 50's Louis,Charles,Moore Walcott, were past prime ex champions with a combined age of 148 , giving them an average age of 35 tells you all you need to know .
