    Yes, he would have a real shot of beating the slow starting Weaver.

    Gerry C00ney's rating and people's perception of him has gone from one end of the spectrum to the other.. He was outrageously over hyped in the early 80's prior to Holmes handing him his ass... Now thirty five years later you have people picking obscure fringe types to beat him... I have always felt that his true status lies somewhere in the middle... His record wasn't stellar but is often unduly belittled for facing weak opposition. While Ken Norton, Ron Lyle and Jimmy Young were faded heavyweights, you still would have been hard pressed to find perhaps 10-12 guys in 1980 who were better than those guys were, and Gerry certainly made short work of them.. Other opponents such as Eddie Greg, Phill Brown, Dino Denis and George Chaplin were at least worthy of fringe and again were dispatched in short order... He had also arguably given a prime Holmes one of the very best fights of his youth..
