Because I think the news that the networks and promoters going head to head would create news all on its own. Also, I dont really care about Floyds numbers one way or another. I dont care to see them hurt, but i also dont care if they are. Sept 13 is a big day for Mexican fighters, not sure why up and coming Mexican stars should cede the date to Floyd just because some hardcore boxing fans feel that since Floyd is #1 p4p he should have dibs just because he is Floyd. Floyd taking another fight against a Khan/Ortiz/etc does nothing for the sport of boxing, it just milks the same crowd for another $75. Time for something new.
I disagree that this is bad. This will force someone like Floyd or pac to fight someone better and more competitive than rios or Guerrero. It's about putting out the best product not gouging the public on non competitive fights. They keep getting away with it.
Too risky. Top Rank would be taking a huge chance and it might not pay off. Chavez & Froch won't fight on Sept 13.
Nah, between UK sky Box Office and Mexican TV rights and gate/site fees it wouldnt really be a risk. Lots of people see to assume US PPV is only revenue stream, which is not the case.
Twitter mean little, Pacquiao has 1.4m followers but it's not like Mayweather sells 4 times the ppv or 4 times the draw. Amir khan has the 3rd highest numbers of followers on twitter in boxing doesn't mean he's anything like the draw of Chavez, Canelo, even Froch now. Twitter followers just means you have a different demographic Floyd probably has a fanbase very much hip hop culture types who are going to be active on Twitter. The likes of Chavez jr and Canelo have different demographics they attract.
It is risky. Mayweather's fights are usually the biggest events in boxing. Even IF they were to make more than he does, they'd still take a huge hit in numbers. They won't be earning the full potential. They'll find another date.
By all reports Floyd's last numbers were not great. I really think if they put up Chavez against Floyd, showtime would reconsider moving the date. If all he got was 900k buys, having Chavez cut in even 300k would be disastrous.
It would be good for either Showtime or HBO. Both would take a significant hit and someone would budge.
I agree someone would budge. And I think it would be showtime. Too much money involved, they couldn't afford a major hit of 300k buys. Whereas, the top rank card could potentially make money or break even. And when you're a dick like arum, that might be good enough for him. He'd be satisfied embarrassing the competition.
A Froch/Chavez Jr PPV could do about 500-600k range. People forget that Mexicans made up a big portion of the Mayweather/Alvarez PPV numbers. When Mayweather wasn't fighting a high profile Mexican fighter, his numbers plummeted. Those PPV buyers will buy Froch/Chavez Jr card instead of the Mayweather card. Arum could break even. Showtime won't.
I think it's extremely generous to suggest anything greater than the Martinez fight when Chavez has declined as a TV draw since then, would be competing against the biggest draw in the sport, and would be taking on an opponent with less North American exposure than Martinez.
