If Ward is planning to move down to 160, this would be the best fight. Otherwise LHW is where Ward should go and Kovalev is who he should fight.
But Golovkin says he can fight at 168. He just recently tried to fight Froch at 168. So I'm not sure why he would need a CW against Ward.
When has Ward tried to fight a HW? Golovkin had a done deal practically with Chavez to fight at 168, and his team pushed hard to make the Froch fight at 168. It doesn't seem like fighting at 168 is much of a problem with Golvokin. So I don't see why he would want a CW against Ward unless he would be hoping to drain him.
You have CWs when guy are too far apart in size. that's not the case with these two. They are 1 division apart. Ward may be drained at 164, while Golovkin has no problem fighting at 168. So I don't see how a 164 lb CW would be fair.
No, Golovkin has not fought at SMW. However, considering he said he would fight anyone from 154-168, and considering he tried to fight Chavez and Froch at 168, then I don't see the problem with a potential Ward vs Golovkin fight taking place at 168. I don't care that Ward fought his last fight at a 172 lb CW, he's not a LHW.
But that's my point here is that the only thing a CW would do is drain Ward. The same excuse you're trying to use for a CW being fair is what anyone else could do for any other CW. You have a guy saying he'll fight anyone at 168 and actively trying to make fights at 168 and you think he should get a CW. I don't understand that.
There are a couple of problems actually. 1) Golovkin said that he would fight anyone 154-168 if the deal is right. He also said that if the fight is not PPV, he rather prefers to clean out 160. 2) Statements from Ward's trainer and Ward himself are contradictory. Virgil said that Ward needs at least 2 tune-up fights, and Ward said that the decision is up to Virgil because he knows what's best for Ward's career. How is Golovkin avoiding you if you want tune-ups? 3) Most people calling for Golovkin vs Ward also criticize Golovkin. That's no coincidence. 4) Why would Ward be allowed to fight a middleweight instead of prime gold medalist IBF champion in his own weight class? Btw, I agree that Golovkin v Chavez Jr would be a joke and shouldn't happen. I don't call for Ward vs Kovalev but I also don't justify people calling for Ward vs Golovkin. Just let each guy compete in his own weight class.
I never said anything about Golovkin avoiding Ward. I just said that I don't see the necessity of a CW if they did fight. I would love to see that fight and I think it should be at 168. I would love to see Ward vs Kovalev too and if that fight happened, then I dont believe a CW would be necessary either.
I agree. Not a supporter of catchweights either. I just don't think that it's fair to request Golovkin to fight Ward just as it's not fair to request Ward to fight Kovalev. Golovkin is doing what he should be doing, by trying to unify at MW, and fighting the best available in the meantime. Ward, however, just keeps calling out those middleweights for years now. He should be after James DeGale, not Golovkin (and I am not even sure if he is after Golovkin, since his own trainer came up with different story).
But Golovkin said he would fight anyone at 168 and has tried to make a fight on 2 different occasions at 168. So how is it not fair to call for a fight involoving him at 168? And you talk about Ward calling out MWs, Golovkin is calling out WWs
Ward talked about hypothetically moving to HW one day. Golovkin has actively tried to make fights at 168. Look, if you think a guy says he'll fight anyone at 168 and has tried to make fights at 168 needs a CW against a SMW be my guest. I disagree.
No, let's not spin the situation. Let's be fair. Golovkin said that he would fight Mayweather at 154 (I know that Floyd is a welterweight, but he is also a champion at 154. So technically, Golovkin would come down to Floyd's own weight class). However, Golovkin only said that he'd like to fight Floyd (when being asked that question), he didn't call Floyd out, nor he accused Floyd of avoiding him. Andre Ward has been using the media to force middleweights to move up to fight him. Also, Ward and his team did call for Floyd Mayweather fight at 160, let's not forget that. If I'm correct, Virgil was saying something about kicking Floyd's a** at 160 and openly criticized Floyd, right? We do not have the same situation here. Golovkin has said that he'd move up to 168 or down to 154 for the right fight financially. Financially, these fights are surely bigger than Golovkin/Ward at 168: Carl Froch Arthur Abraham Felix Sturm I have a feeling that some people just badly want to see Golovkin lose, therefore they want him to move up and fight the most stylistically difficult fighter for him at 168. I'm not saying that I wouldn't like to see Golovkin/Ward, just saying that the he is under no obligation to do that and that the hatred towards Golovkin is obvious from some people.
