'special sauce' lol, I like it...is it like a pull back in a sense? the punch your talking about ! does it feel like your not putting full power in to it but its the way it connects that generates the power ?
It's more what you're doing with your shoulder. Most people "drag" their power punches to their target. But you need to use your shoulder like a very heavy whip. You really feel it when you're throwing it in shadow boxing. It took me a year or two before I started doing it. I wasn't trying. I was just following Joe Louis advice on punching, and all of a sudden I threw one shoulder snap punch one day and was shocked and scared at the power. As soon as you throw your first one, you'll always know how to do it. It's crazy how much boxers "leave off the table" in terms of their potential for power. But I don't blame them. I think it's something you have to learn at home, not the gym.
I'm not sure if he mentions shoulder snap. I use the term shoulder snap because Mike Tyson coined it when Larry Merchant asked him how to produce KO power: This content is protected Tyson has a less pure shoulder snap than guys like Foreman, Golovkin, and Marciano. He sacrificed some of it for fast short punch combos.
you've explained it how I was trying to lol..i forget who was stating the difference between a ko puncher and a feather fisted type puncher, but it was someone reputed/trainer. They were of the opinion it was generally down to mind set/confidence. I agree with it to some extent
Yeah. I'm a believer that if you really want to be a power puncher, and work at it, you will become one. And having the old school fighters on youtube helps a lot. When you think you're punching great, you look at them and realize how much farther you have to go. It forces you to question yourself, explore different techniques to make those improvements.
Never thought of the concept this way, as a technique in and of itself, but quickfiring from the shoulder definitely produces a better punch. Even if there's a slight drag it can slow down the punches. It almost takes less effort to snap the shoulder, it's more about the explosive speed than throwing all your weight into it.
Seems unhealthy for your tendons... not sure theyre supposed to be 'snapped' like that? Then again if G uses this constantly with no problems maybe there isn't.
I've never seen this one, thanks. I went back and looked at Dempsey. He goes through a number of descriptions of snapping a punch.
