Number one in IBF (Glazkov) recently went the distance with Cunningham to win on points Maybe Joshua should fight Cunningham and see how he does
Fury struggled with Mcdermott, got floored by pajkic and Cunningham all before winning a title. Klitschko lost to puritty. Even Ali had problems against Doug Jones and Henry Cooper. I thought AJ showed his stamina wasn't too bad and that he can carry his power Later on in to a fight. He showed his chin isn't glass and he showed he can adjust. Concerns are that his legs stopped working in the second when hurt and rather than clinching to recover he tried to fight his way out of trouble. I think he deserves credit, he has shown more heart and grit than Audley and Price by getting through this sort ot fight.
It's the first time he's been tagged, we were all waiting for it and to see what would happen. He went a bit wobbly and stiff, but he pulled through on his first test. A better opponent probably would of finished him them, but he's on a learning curve, he doesn't wanna be getting tagged and finished this early in his career. He knows what it feels like now, and he's felt from a pretty decent puncher.
There was a lot of emotion and nervous energy in the early rounds last night and as a consequence technique and tactics were forgot about at times. AJ also probably thought the job was all but done going into the 2nd and got sloppy. To my mind he's shown a better chin than Price, better movement than Bruno...just, and more 1 punch KO power than I originally thought by icing a more durable than average Dillian Whyte in the 7th round. The flaws in his game are obvious to everyone and can be easily rectified in the main so I think there's plenty yet to come and there's plenty of potential there. Writing him off on last nights performance is just plain ridiculous and comes from those who obviously have some beef to grind about him.
I will also add, there is not many heavyweights out there with the combination of power, size, chin & agression that Whyte showed, maybe Wilder but he hasn't got the chin to last as long as Whyte did, povetkin very powerful & agressive with a good chin but lacking the size, Teper could fit the bill, although looking at his KO victims his power could just be a smoke & mirros act, who knows?
When Joshua blasts guys in a round people complain that he's not being tested; when he gets tested they say he should have won better. He can't win with some people. I'm interested in how he looks next time out because, hopefully, then we will see what lessons he learned from this fight.
Got tagged, went into his shell. I'm sure in his interview after he claimed to have shown a lot of heart. He only got hit twice. If he thinks that's heart I can't wait to see someone drag him into the trenches.
Everyone struggles with an opponent at some point in there career, Fury with McDermott and Cunningham, Wilder with Sconiers, Brook with Jones etc. Joshua got tagged in the 2nd with a clean shot and got buzzed, he recovered pretty well though, didn't take much after that and went on and KO'd the guy pretty convincingly in the end. I think in time this could go down as a very good win, you need tough fights to learn, make you do different things in camp, you find out where to improve before you get the same difficulties against an even better fighter, something that will limit Wilder in the future as he hasn't had these tough fights against good fighters.
Which kind of highlights how weak this division is in reality Where are all the guys who would destroy Joshua? Even now
Difference is that during this period of Fury's career he barely trained and his diet consisted of mainly sweets, burgers and beer. From what I can see Joshua as always lived the life of a pro athlete whereas Fury was living the life of a normal lad off the street. Only in the last few years as he started to dedicate himself to the sport hence the improvement. Think its going to be hard for Joshua to show the same increase in levels!
Good post. Fury got decked heavily by a feather fisted cruiserweight and look what's gone on to achieve.
