I disagree. How can you say Golota was ruined? He came out of that fight on a high. He just dominated a still elite Bowe who many considered at the time to be ATG Material. He took a lot of shots during that fight, but he clearly won the match without the low blows. The low blows was something that he had difficulty controlling, but it's not like he was taking a massive beating. Here is quotes from expert boxing writers after the Golota-Bowe fight. "Golota will force Lewis into his kind of a fight, and his power will be the determining factor in the bout." - Dave Bontempo, ESPN Boxing Analyst "Golota is an underrated fighter who doesn't get enough credit. He will have leaned his lessons from the Bowe fights and will finish off Lewis." - Anthony Gargano, New York Post "Golota in two rounds - no contest. I think Lewis talks, but can't back it up with the the walk. Golota will absolutely be too much for him." - Dan Hirshberg, The Trentonian "Golota will put too much pressure on Lewis, who will make the mistake of slugging it out with him." - Steve Sneddon, Gannet News Service "It'll be close through four, and then Golota hits and hurts Lewis in the fifth with a booming right. He then proceeds to wear Lewis down for a ninth-round win." - Chris Thorne, Newark Star-Ledger "Golota will turn the fight into a war. he can take a short. I'm not sure that Lewis can. Lewis will try to keep his distance but won't be able to for long." - Robert Seltzer, El Paso Times. I know you are a huge Golota fan, but the truth is there is nothing that indicates what so ever Andrew Golota was ruined by Riddick Bowe.
There were many factors in Bowe's demise and Golota was one of them. With hindsight it's clear Bowe had declined due to a combination of poor discipline and a lack of defence that saw him take too many punches during his short career. But he was still very highly rated at the time, infact many still regarded Bowe as the number 1 heavyweight in the world. He was past his best but far from shot in the first Golota fight, he was still good enough to beat many fighters at the time, despite his declining ability and poor conditioning. Bowe's lazy tendencies really cost him big against Golota. He came in at his heaviest and took a beating which accelerated his demise and ruined him. Bowe lost too much weight too quickly for the second fight and looked shot or very close to it. He lacked co-ordination and his legs had gone. Brutal, brutal fight.
Bowe was never any good. He only fought much smaller guys. Even decent guys of his own size he could not handle. And Lewis.... he was terrified of. Bowe met tiny Evander and suddenly people think Bowe was any good. Ridiculous.
The truth. Unfortunately two events coloured a lot of peoples' perception of reality: 1: Evander beating Tyson. Evander was one of the best fighters in the world (if not the best!) against boxers of his own size. He was overall brilliant but did not have Tyson's ability against larger guys. Tyson on the other hand used his lack of size to his advantage against taller guys by bending both legs and waist. 2. Evander's fights with Bowe made many people think that Evander > Tyson.. so perhaps Bowe > Evander > Tyson. This doesn't work in boxing and is especially wrong in this case. Bowe was average against decent guys his own size and Evander due to style lost some of the strenght he had against fighters of his own size. In short, Evander's win over Tyson has a lot to due with styles and size (similar size.. and against similar sized opponents Evander is one of the best ever). Bowe's win over Evander is due to styles and more to size. Therefore people believed that of course Bowe could beat an above average fighter like Golota (because surely Tyson could). This idea was a fatamogana because Bowe was never really good and certainly no Lewis etc.
Lewis would have brutalised Bowe so badly his mother wouldn't have recognised him. I can't begin to imagine the sort of beating either version of Bowe would have received from Lewis. It would have been literally career ending.
only golota could find a way to lose in not 1 but 2 fights were he completely destroyed the opponent (victim in this case) golota is probably why bowe has slurred speech today
Bowe was good. Very good. But he was never the mythical H2H beast that people like to make him out to be. Sure he beat Evander. Great win. But why does that suddenly mean he could beat any great heavyweight in history? I've never understood that. Evander was Evander, a great fighter but one who was beatable against the right sort of style. Hardly the epitome of every great champion in history. As for Bowe, he had talent, and he had great attributes, but he simply lacked the consistency, dedication and mental concentration to ever capitalise on those things and fight in the manner that he should've fought in if he wanted a long and successful career.
So many incredibly stupid & ignorant posts in this thread Everything wrong with ESB in a nutshell :-(
this:good...............even rock newman said in 2002........... bowe would balloon in between fights then come down...NOT VERY HEALTHY
