If Macklin comes out like he did against Sturm he won't see the 3rd round. I don't think he is better than Golovkin in any area. Golovkin hasn't had the need for judges cards to be called out since 2008, i suspect he won't this time either.
Macklin can't fight off the back foot he's a come forward pressure fighter that likes to harass his opponents and over whelm them. Macklin carries his hands a bit low sometimes so he needs to keep his guard a lot tighter but other than that he should just stick to what he knows best and try and put GGG under pressure from the off. GGG does seem slightly slow paced even when cutting the ring down so if macklin can set a high tempo and take him out his comfort zone maybe we'll see GGG pushed. Personally I think macklin gets stopped inside 8 rounds as he's too easy to hit and he's been stopped before by lesser punchers but huge respect to him for taking the fight no one else would and i hope he gives it a real go.
I mentioned the Sturm/Martinez bouts just as an example of how Macklin has quite a bit of big fight experience, and that he faced some true quality before, so that task of fighting GGG shouldn't daunt him. I know both Sturm/Martinez have different styles to Golovkin, so Macklin will have to adjust his game plan accordingly. He'll need to display more lateral movement, use his jab effectively and he has to avoid a trading contest with the huge puncher at all costs. I don't buy it when a lot of posters are saying that Macklin will come forward, and turn it into a fight, because that would be reckless and stupid, and would almost certainly result in a few rounds. They said he'd do the same thing when he was getting ready to face Martinez, yet come fight night he displayed more movement and boxing skills than people were expecting, and wasn't out of his depth against a combination punching speedster like Martinez. Mack has got a good trainer in Buddy McGirt and he'll have the best game plan possible for him. He'll almost certainly try and box off the back foot against Golovkin, at least as Gennady allows him to. And as much as people are playing up GGG' strengths, his power, chin, timing, workrate etc, he does have certain flaws. His feet aren't very quick, even though he can cut of the ring fairly well, he can be fairly open defensively and isn't incredibly quick (I think Martinez and Sturm trump him both defensively and in the speed department). Im not sure if Macklin can take full advantage of these things, but thats what he'll be aiming to do anyways. I could see Matthew making this a hard fight for Golovkin, certainly much more than any of his recent opponents managed. He should be able to take some rounds and last until the later rounds should he be on his game defensively. I cant see him taking what Golovkin has to dish out all night, and I can see Macklin will most likely get broken down and stopped late in the fight.
Macklin can win this Ggg has been in with light middles so test his chin Ggg is front foot fighter himself so use educated pressure because you want to avoid big bombs walking in High guard and lots of head movement, ggg is excellent boxer with great feet Macks been in tough fights with Moore, sturm, martinez ggg has never been pushed or had his resolve tested in the ring so he has to work ggg till he drops Golovkins favourite with everyone including me but don't think mack can't win Great fight, what channel
GGG to find suprisingly find it tougher than most expect early. Then, predictably, Macklin to fade and get stopped. TKO10
He won't come out like that, if he did that against Martinez he woulda been ****ed aswell, he will probably try to box but either way it wont end well Glad Golovkin will get a big win so the Martinez fight is that bit closer
Macklins best bet would be to smother golovkin as I don't believe hes got the skills to beat him on the outside obviously doing that means hes putting himself in harms way but don't see another way he could do it tbh
Well, certainly Macklin ought to make it a lot hotter for Golovkin than Rosado, Ishida, Simon etc, since he's a lot better. In theory he should do better, but if he gets caught its possible it won't look much better for him than it did for any of them, if you can't handle what could be unusual power for the weight class it ain't going to matter if you're a higher level. That's a big question we'll get answered about Golovkin's power and Macklin's resistance, we'll know very, very early on. If Macklin goes too much onto the backfoot and starts getting bullied you'll know its going to be a struggle and he can't really stay with Golovkin's power. My problem with him in this fight is I don't like his boxing skills on the back foot. The reason people are talking about him being aggressive is because realistically its the only time he is world class, he looked at his best just smothering Sturm and pushing out the volume. He did okay against Martinez at periods, just as Barker did, but its one thing to fight like that against a counterpuncher and hold your own for a while, and realistically that's all he did, its a completely different thing to hold it all together if you're getting stalked around the ring by a power puncher. It's going to be a lot more physical and mental pressure and a true test of technique. I don't think he has a lot of power going backwards, and I don't think that pushed/loose technique jab is going to bother Golovkin one bit, its not really a tight jab like you'd see from a Sturm type fighter. I always think back to a fight against Geard Ajetovic and Macklin was getting pushed around by a strong kid, albeit Macklin has likely improved a great deal, but he looked vulnerable and uncomfortable under pressure in that one and its hard to see what he'll do. It's a great fight though, if Macklin can land his left-hook counter with some regularity I see that as his real chance, but I fear he'll get stopped by bodyshots as he'll be very eager to stop Golovkin landing big upstairs, but Golovkin punches well downstairs too.
All good stuff from TFFP but I just chose this part to copy as I couldn't have put it better myself. Sergio didn't even apply the pressure till late and when he did Mack caved in a few rounds. I see GGG gleefully stalking from the off if Mack allows it and unless GGG gasses late and Macklin has some new found stellar punch resistance, I just don't see him being around to ask the question.
I agree with most of this post basically, Macklin can't suddenly fight off the back foot and pick GGG off all night as he just isn't that sort of fighter. Those tactics wouldn't be right based on his ability, he will look to fight as he did against Martinez with intense but educated pressure, I just don't think it'll be successful and however Macklin fights he is not exactly difficult to hit. Macklin knows that if he tries to out box him he'll likely fail and he is going to want to be able to say that he at least gave it his best shot afterwards and that he tried to win the fight so he will come out firing I am 100% sure. It'll never be a chess match and realistically Macklin's best hope is to put the pressure on and try and land and just hope that GGG isn't actually the future p4p star he's made out to be and can't handle it when he does. He won't counter punch GGG and will probably try and get in and out as quickly as possible using head movement to get close enough to get his shots off before slipping out of range again. It worked OK in patches against Martinez, against Sturm he threw the kitchen sink from the opening bell but he gassed and became ragged and got picked off with the better shots, he lost that fight by 2 rounds on my card it wasn't that close and certainly not a robbery.
My worry is that Macklin will start to take heavy shots and McGirt will pull him out too early like against Martinez.
I hope Mackiln is making top dollar for this.... hes going to take a bad beating but bless his heart he's got cajones. After this he'll be finished in terms of World title opportunities after losing to GGG, Sturm and Martinez- hopefully he'll come back over here and base himself for fights with Murray (after he too is smashed up by Martinez) and Barker etc
