GGG won the WBA title in 2010. By 2020, he'll be 38 years old. Duran was a great light weight, but GGG crushes him at 160 pounds. GGG holds the highest knockout percentage – 91.8% – in middleweight championship history. He is also said to have one of the best chins in modern boxing, having never been knocked down or knocked out in a total of 375 fights, neither as a professional nor amateur! He also has 17th consecutive middleweight title defenses. Hopkins has 20, GGG will pass that. How many title defenses did Duran have? A bit less.
I doubt Golovkin would crush Duran at 160 if we're talking the man who faced Hagler. Stylistically Duran could really make him look bad, even in defeat. We all know the GGG stats but the problem is he's competing in one of if not the worst middleweight era in boxing history and his competition has been pityful. I think Duran had 12 defences winning 11 by knock out. As I said earlier when Golovkin beats the calibre of boxers Duran did during his lightweight dominance then we can talk who's reign was greater.
based on GGG fight experience at this time I would still have to go with Duran but it would have to be Duran at his best like the Montreal Duran...GGG is still an always dangerous guy but he got hit much in his last fight to beat a prime & conditioned Duran. In the 70's I felt Duran was the best LB4LB and was more impressed with him than Ali...Duran was the greatest of the era despite that fact that his conditioning or lifestyle was not steady
Duran quit when Sugar ray started to land to his body. He was KO'd early by one punch from Hearns. Both these guys were best at welter and did not hit hard as hard as GGG. Duran was best at lightweight. We are talking middleweight. In addition to being much smaller, he has the wrong style to beat GGG which would be a long-armed jabber with quick feet, durability and some power, capable of clinching when needed. GGG's opposition is hard to grade. He crushes them. If they fought each other we'd get a better idea, but those type of top ten non -title fights are hard to make these days. It's a pity Mayweather or Canelo didn't fight GGG. Hagler and Monzon feasted on blown up Welters.
What are you talking about? Seems like you're just making stuff up now. Duran quit against Leonard because he was frustrated by Leonards movement and clowning. Not once was he hurt in that fight. Duran was destroyed by Hearns because of his reach, speed, clever faints and devastating one punch power. There's also questions over the shape Duran went into the ring in both those fights. Duran had most trouble with negative movement and speed. Those are tools GGG does not possess. Duran would likely look good against Golovkin's robotic style because he was a brilliant counter puncher and extremely hard to hit clean. He would be able to read Golovkin like a book. Duran was as crafty as they come in a dog fight. The only guy to ever destroy him was Tommy Hearns, but Golovkin is not Tommy Hearns, he's closer in style to Moore and Barkley, and in this fight were comparing the best version of 'middleweight' Duran not the bloated mess who fought Hearns at welterweight.
Lol, Duran quit because he was frustrated by Leonard's movement? Wrong, Sugar Ray started to land hard, and Duran had enough. Watch the films. If he was angry with Leonard he's in the perfect spot to retaliate with punches. Duran was destroyed by Hearns because Hearns could punch. It was a one punch KO and Duran was out in less than 2 rounds. So Duran is on a very short list of fighters who quit and were KO'd early by one punch. Sorry, it's true and not made up. Duran above 150 pounds wasn't great. Two quick examples: Kirkland Laing, a 23-3-1 fighter with little power beat him!. Duran was 31 years old. Robbie Sims, a 24-6-1 fighter beat Duran when he was close to the same age GGG is now. Can you imagine either of these two beating GGG? No way! At 5'7" tall with a very short 66" reach, how in the world is Duran who liked to be aggressive going to outbox GGG? GGG won't be intimidated in the slightest and would welcome the exchanges. Brook was a good counter puncher. We all saw what GGG did to him.
Provide clips of when Duran was hurt by Leonard in the second fight please? He was hit by harder shots in Montreal. It is widely known why Duran quit and it wasn't because he was hurt. You're just making **** up to suit your agenda. Yes Duran was KOd because Hearns could punch, I never argued against that. And yes Duran is on a very short list of boxers who have quit and we're KOd early by one punch. What you are deliberately overlooking to suit your agenda is the problem Duran had with Hearns speed, faints and massive reach advantage. Golovkin does not possess the combination of tools Hearns used to beat Duran and quite frankly couldn't lace his gloves. Duran has some poor peformances against guys he should've beat but we all know about his habbits between fights that effected him come fight night which resulted in his inconsistencies above lightweight. Anyway just to **** you off I would argue that Laing and Sims are better than any fighter Golovkin has faced. Durans reach would not be a problem as Golovkin is predictable, robotic, pretty slow and easy to hit. Durans biggest problem would be lasting the pace against Golovkin's relentless stalking. If he tires like he did in the later rounds vs Hagler he could get stopped. I'm pretty confident win or lose Duran would have Golovkin looking garbage for the majority of the fight. I don't even know what to say to that Brook comment. I'll give you a lol for that one mate. There's levels in boxing that you're obviously unable to tell the difference between. For example the difference between a good counter puncher and an ATG counter puncher. If Brook can light up Golovkin and make him miss imagine what the much slicker more durable Duran would do.
You're making too many excuses. GGG doesn't need any excuses. Fighters try to be actors when they are hurt. Sugar Ray was getting to him. NO MAS! GGG doesn't care about feints or even getting hit, let alone being hit from a blown up lightweight who didn't even hit as hard as Brook! Sure, counter punch him, although we both know that seldom happens when GGG lands a body shot. Who made GGG miss badly without getting caught by big punches? No one. His timing and accuracy are good. Laing and Sims are better than anyone GGG faced? You're just saying this because they upset Duran. If Duran was so great above 150 pounds, this would not have happened. Own up to facts. Besides GGG beat guys on their level already. Check that, he knocked them out! Duran's height 5'7" and reach ( 66" ) would not be an issue in this match up? LOL, yes it would. And GGG's jab would find its mark if Duran hung back, which as we know what, not his best style. I'm not saying Duran wasn't great a lightweight. He was. But we are talking middleweight here. Duran's a sure loser at 160 pounds, I'd bet a month's mortgage on it.
Did I say something that wasn't true? No, I did not. It only hurts because there are lots of Duran fans here. Respect for him at lightweight. But please do tell me one great fighter he defeated above 154 pounds. I see none. Duran mostly lost to the best he fought at 154 or higher, and frankly, some of the guys who beat him would lose to GGG rather easily.
Yes, you said Duran quit because Leonard was hurting him which is not true. I'm still waiting on you providing evidence of this. Duran never beat a great fighter above 154, neather has Golovkin, Infact he hasnt even fought an elite fighter above 154 lol. Duran beating Moore, Barkley and losing a competitive fight against an absolute prime Hagler while also being the first to take him 15 rounds in a title fight >>>>>>> Golovkin's entire career.
That's because GGG hasn't fought anybody worth a ****. Garbage excuse to get out of providing evidence of Duran quiting because he was getting hurt. Quite embarrassing actually. Golovkin does use faints, he's Just not as good as Hearns, plus the shots that come after the faints aren't very fast. This is the problem against Duran who is a master at the slip and counter. Jesus Christ, now Brook hits harder than Duran lol. Have you even watched what Duran did to Davie Moore? Could Brook replicate that? Do you think Brook could put Barkley on his back like Duran did? Barkley was a massive middleweight with a good chin who eventually went up to fight at light heavyweight. Is Brook dropping him? Ok, answer this - Who has Golovkin beat that's on the level of Barkley? I like Golovkin's jab but it's not as good as Haglers. I doubt it would caus Duran much problems. Infact he would probably relish slipping and countering Golovkin's telegraphed jabs. Golovkin's extremely good in terms of his punching technique and his balance is impressive but he's predictable and his heads a stationery target. Duran's a stylistic nightmare for Golovkin.
Very, very tough call. GGG has more power of that there's no doubt, but he likes stalking his fighters, with Duran he wouldn't have to stalk him at all, Duran would be right in front of him willing to engage. It would be a case of one, GGG having the superior power, and the other, Duran, having a much better defense and ability to use all the tricks a masterful infighter has at his disposal. I would say for sure we are talking about a war, and a body punching clinic by both fighters. I think the Duran of Barkley and Hagler beats the Golovkin of Brook, but beyond that it's a hard call. I know it's easy to say that Golovkin's superior power would result in him stopping Duran, but I think that's far to simplistic of an analysis and completely ignores Duran's superior in-fighting skills, including his defense. I started off thinking this was triple G's fight, but the more I think about it the harder it is for me to arrive at that conclusion. Most of the fighters G fought were stalked and on their back foots and in many cases fighting along the ropes and even then it sometimes took G 7-8 rounds to dispose of them, but I still don't think there's ever been a better in fighter than Duran, and that's what this would end up being.
I agree with much of this, though I'd still make Golovkin a big favorite here. I actually think that Golovkin might be a better fight for Duran than Canelo is for stylistic reasons. Duran's infighting skills would give him a very good chance against Golovkin, provided that he doesn't get knocked silly at some point. I could see Duran getting the best of Golovkin in the early going but the question is whether Golovkin would persevere and find a way to turn around the fight with his heavy shots. Of course, its also possible that Golovkin catches him with something very heavy right away and finishes him early. EDIT: originally accidentally typed "Duran's infighting skills would give him a very good chance against Canelo," when I meant "against Golovkin"
