I watched that Shea Neary doc (which was brilliant) and it showed Jimmy Lennon Jr introducing one of Neary's fights in Liverpool - the best MC in the business
Chisora Sexton 1 was a good 1 coz had the Walshys on there too crowd was good for that. Had Kell Brook, Anthony Small and Vinny Mitchell on there all of whom had more respect then than now!! The 1 LP was there 4 was good too with Dels 'Tyson moment', and honestly despite its flaws a prizefighter night is v recommended live so much better than on the box. Glen Johnson and the Hattons fought there on the same card of course, its a special place. The Hall itself is classy, compact and the crowd you get there 99/100 is great and educated, by that I dont mean in a poncy algebra way I mean u rarely get footy dick-heads or people just there for a fight themsleves you know. Best fight I saw there was Haye-Fragomeni EU Title, Haye cut and knackered came back to stop him. Good action atmosphere was pretty good and back then Haye was respected for takin on tough fights
That Chisora v Sexton fight looked like a good one to attend and great atmosphere and good shout with Haye-Fragomeni. I agree with you regards Prizefighter, I have been to a Prizefighter at the York Hall and it was a brilliant night. Pockets of different supporters all around the hall cheering on their fighter and no trouble whatsoever. It is a pity they moved Prizefighter from the York Hall, as that tourney really feels right in the York Hall. Wish someone would write a book on the great nights at the York Hall (i.e. someone who has attended many of the most memorable shows over the years), whilst they tell the story of the history of the venue - would be a great read.
love going boxing there. we watched the last prizefighter there, and although in the cheap seats we were no more than 10m from the corner;could see evrything and sykes walked right by us - although you could see that he hadn't got a clue where he was!! upstairs is a great view - you're so close to the action.we saw cleverly take courtney fry apart, about 20m from us - you can't do that at wembley or birmingham unless you part with megabucks. lovely old victorian venue and has a great atmosphere
In a sense thats what its all about, compact generally good natured and you tend to get a lot of fights for ur £ and you get a good view wherever you are. Spencer Fearon incidently does good shows there, pretty low key level but always well matched fights throughout the card and the place is lively. Actually that Clev-Fry fight was 1 of the few times there was a bit of trouble and that was nipped in the bud early. Just little things like fighters hanging about for a chat/pic after and havin a sneaky in between fight beer but bein stopped on the way back to your seat coz the fighters are walking to the ring. Even if the cards not been of great quality its still a wicked night out, boxing and brick lane curry way to do it. Agree with request for a York Hall segment on Bunceys show would be sweet
I've actually never been, which I'm ashamed to admit. :-( Hopefully I'll get down there sometime soon.
we follow nathan graham so we often go to fearon's shows (kensington town hall is not a bad venue),and they are good value for money . we'll be at york hall in a couple of weeks as nathan is support on the peter mcdonagh southern area fight. we go for eats at a nice spanish cafe/restaurant in columbia road beforehand for some good quality tapas, but the brick lane idea sounds a deffo possibility!
yh been a couple of times last card i saw was cleverly-mcintosh. pisses me off the way you can't take drinks outside the bar area

I was going to ask what pubs you recommend near York Hall, but I will look out for the one beside the tapas place - by the way what do you mean by 'wonderful hoxten set characters'?:think There are some nice curries houses further up from Nandos - and I noticed James Degale with Jim McDonnell in Nando's getting some prefight nosh before a York Hall show
the boozer in approach road is quite pleasant and always busy - we usually park in the road at the side of it. think the columbia road is the royal oak - trendy cool cats,arty-typesand eccentrics would sum up the clientele. last time we were in there a steady stream of people dressed in lounge suits, flapper dresses and 40's gear disappered into the dining area.weird
