You just wonder if he could have capitalised on that victory, got some life changing money, instead of disappearing off the face of the earth for a year! Mind you, Colin Jones beat him quite handily twice, when he was still at or near his peak, what a puncher Jones was...... Still maintain he beat McCrory in the first fight though.
Tony Sibson worthy of a mention. Probably not a 'great', but pretty good. British champion (holds a Lonsdale belt). European champion. Commonwealth champion. 3 x World title contender.
Yes but he DID go absent for 3 years after that fight cos he heard Duran wanted a return ha ha. Not denigrating Laing but Colin Jones stopped him twice. Didn't Honeyghan beat him? Then Buck Smith who was considered a journeyman at world level, plus another American stopped him forgot the name. If you have Kirkland as a great you've got to have Buster Douglas as one. Terrific boxer though im not knocking the lad. For me the only REAL greats at word level on Journeyman's list are Conteh and Lewis. At British great level all of them, including Laing. Just.
yup IBO, did win Commonwealth and ABAs though....and the WBF Intercontinental! He's not a great boxing-wise but has done loads locally helping young people through his boxing academy, think that's what he got his MBE for. He's definitely a great in terms of good people. The IBO belt does look quite nice and I used to like it until Eubank Jr won it. I thought it was a biggy when I was teenager cos Lewis had it. I bet the IBO paid him to have it instead of him paying sanctioning fees.
That is true they did do that and also to Roy Jones. By the time Hatton had it though they were charging sanctioning fees.
That's what I meant, decent fighter, but not a "world" champion as he was billed, (although a Commonwealth champion, as well, and probably good British/European class,)and even though Hatton wore the lightly regarded WBU, he at least made up for it later on
Loved the job he did on John Collins, when he was clearly brought in as the "opponent" to look good against.
Comments re Laing are fair, given his talent, he definitely underachieved. And he he didn't have the strongest of chins. I just loved the guy though
Are you naming great British boxers or just British boxers names you know? What’s Conor Benn doing there, what’s he done even before the drug pop? couple of the jock fighters need on the list ken Buchanan obviously and I’d put Ricky burns there I wasn’t his fan but can’t deny a 3 division world champ. Josh Taylor, he might be a ***** but he was an undisputed champ for a while. I’d remove AJ most manufactured champ of all time, greatest management not greatest fighter. Fury id also argue doesn’t deserve the list although beating klit almost cemented it but avoiding rematch, drug bust, and ducking aj and usyk while cherry picking shocking opponents is not what a great fighter does. Yea he beat wilder but in all honesty is wilder actually proven, who’s his best win? bob fitzsimmons needs a mention Johnny Nelson was a champ for a long time Barry McGuigan
