Bellew avoided the WBSS like the plague. If he entered and somehow made it past the quarters, he'd have been demolished by any of the semi-finalists. Gassiev, Dorticos, Briedis and of course Usyk would have all embarrassed him. How he can call himself the WBC champ in that era is embarrassing as well, no wonder it's hard to get new boxing fans who actually want to properly follow the sport.
Yep I agree. Remember being on the edge of my seat when he traded shots with "Dangerous" Don Lee, still gutted he lost that! Loved Sibbo, brutal power, and classy in defeat, he admitted that Hagler made him pay for his mistakes more than anyone else had ever done. Would probably be a super middleweight today
me too even though I only found his fights after his career. I do think Buncey's interview with him when he was struggling was good and with empathy. I understand he moved back to be with his family for his final years.
I used to think think the WBU was a proper belt when I was a teenager as George Foreman had it! And then Enzo Mac when I was bit older.
Really sad ending Sean, and Buncey showing his mettle as a really good journo in that article, I know he was really fond of The Gifted One
I know Buncey can be a caricature but his passion showed in that fight. He boxed too for Fitzroy Lodge didn't he as a teenager.
Agree with all of this but why would Bellew go into a risky tournament when he'd clearly planned the circus with Haye? Willing to bet the proceeds of Haye 1 and 2 are well beyond what he'd have made for winning the WBSS, which he wouldn't have. So it was a duck but financially, and as an existing champion, you could understand it. His tilt at Usyk was worth a go, a risk-free one-off.
Also, Bellew paid his mandatory (Briedis) step aside money and a place on the undercard so he could fight a voluntary in BJ Flores and then vacated his belt straight after
Josh Taylor the most disrespected British boxer of my lifetime. Undisputed champion in a ridiculous amounts of time. Some achievement.
