Mike was beaten by Al chico Evans in a golden gloves fight by stoppage when he was 16. Someone said he had not boxed many fights and did not do that much as an amateur , He won so many Nationals and Jr Olympic titles, Mike had a very decorated Ame career..
Didn't Michael Bentt have a good amateur record or something? Thought he won three or four Golden Gloves tournaments. I wouldn't mind knowing Jorge Luis Gonzalez's record either...he only had a handful of losses and a lot of wins. Senya13, great lists!
Re - Tyson's amateur losses. This is the exact info I have : November 1981 - Lost PTS3 to Ernie Bennet (USA) in Rhode Island, USA December 12th 1982 - Lost TKO3 to Al Evans (USA) in Binghampton, USA (AAU Championships) March 26th 1983 - Lost PTS3 to Craig Payne (USA) in Alburquerque, USA (Golden Gloves Final) December 10th 1983 - Lost DQ2 to Kimmuel Odum (USA) in Colorado Springs, USA (AAU Championships) June 10th 1984 - Lost PTS3 to Henry Tillman (USA) in Fort Worth, USA (US Olympic Trials) July 7th 1984 - Lost PTS3 to Henry Tillman (USA) in Las Vegas, USA (US Olympic Trials Box-Off)
Weird one, actually. Allegedly, Odum was very negative and passive in the bout, to the point where Tyson got so angry he turned his back in disgust and simply walked out of the bout in fury, claiming Odum didn't want to fight. That's one way to get a win against Mike, I guess!
Larry Holmes was 19-3. He lost to Nick Wells by KO twice, and was DQ'd in the olympics for clinching. I think Rocky Marciano was like 23-4 or 19-4. I know he was DQ'd for kneeing someone in the stomach, and I know he lost a disputed (How disputed an amerature fight can get) decision to someone else.
Buh...? That's a novel one. Certainly can't say I've seen that one before...you'd think it would be too much effort to do that while a elbow or headbutt would do.
I didn't want to raise the issue, as I don't have any source, but through the fifties and sixties, it was always mentioned that Ezzard Charles had the best amateur record, and had been undefeated in 40 bouts. Robinson was never mentioned as undefeated until the last 15 years or so, but I do not know of a specific loss, myself. Whenever Billy Graham appeared on TV as a boxer or referee, it was mentioned that he beat Robinson as an amateur while Robinson was still using the name Walker Smith. If it wasn't true, I'm surprised Robinson never publicly challenged it.
