Seems quite rare. Have there been any elite world level fighters (im talking top 10 in there division of all time) that have gone on to be elite trainers with multiple world champs???
Not off the top of my head. Loads of good mid-level/top contenders though, first one that comes to mind is Jack Blackburn.
who did he go on to train? its the same with most sports isnt it. football, tennis (the other sports i follow) the best players rarley become the best coaches. Beckenbauer & Cryuff the exceptions.
thats because they used the top 2 inches, wheras other greats in all sports use natural ability and instinct. You also have to be able to speak well and convey your ideas
There's gonna be fewer and fewer top fighters becoming trainers too. Especially in the States, where many average fighters can earn big money on HBO if they're with DLH or Al Haymon.
I actually also read somewhere that Willie Pep started to coach some fighters after he stopped but had to pack it in because he kept cracking up at his fighters because they couldnt do somethings he asked and he simply couldnt get his head around that
McGirt is actually quite a good trainer, but his cornerwork isn't the best. His record probably isn't helped by having some of his fighters put in gross mismatches, like Gatti vs Mayweather for instance. I think plenty of good footballers make good coaches, though that's not the case in England. Of all top English players I can only recall Jack Charlton having any success..... most of the British managers to win things here have been Scottish.
Clough was a good player wasnt he? Seemed to get to the top of management by being strong willed and slightly mental
