The wrong belief probably was because he could not speak english and it is very important if you want to get to everybody, he was not a clown like bonavena but the guy had definitely a big personality.
probably not a very popular opinion but i always found hattons man of the people, pint of guinness, manchester working class shtick so tedious.
Yeah, sounds like he was a thug and a terrible human being, but I'd never heard of him not having personality outside the ring.
Why is his death tragic? Have you ever seen the crime scene footage? It was horrible what he did to that woman. He was treated with kid gloves in prison. He deserved what happened to him. A friend of mine who covered him for the press in France told me he acted like an elitest snob who thought he was better than everyone. He sorrounded himself with European stars and starlets who fawned over him like wannabes sometimes do with gangsters and that just fed his ego.
Then strike off all the bad actors amongst all boxing greats and ask yourself a question, who makes your cut? You hate Liston, Lyle, Carter, and God knows how many else. It's not enough that you follow boxing for the ring exploits of these men, but you're apparently an arbiter of good and evil here as well. It was tragic that Monzon lived and died as he did in his personal life. Tragic for those he bullied and abused, tragic for the woman he killed, and tragic as well how he ultimately died. Do you condemn and have contempt for the beatings that Sugar Ray Robinson gave his pregnant wife? When he died, was it a matter of no consequences to you? How about Jack Dempsey's ***** mongering past, or the **** that Mike Tyson did? You can wear your white hat if you want to,...all these posts (by everyone) are all opinion driven....whether it be concerning in the ring or outside the ring exploits....it's all subjective, remember that.
But did you ever hear of him ever having a personality outside the ring, unless Spanish is your second language?
I'm not condemning Monzon myself, as I've repeatedly said, including in this thread,...but rather the Latin, Spanish speaking press for not publicizing this largely unknown great of theirs any better than they have already. No English language movies or books of any kind...my God, Monzon's life and career positively screams out to have a movie made of him...and books written.....for God's sake, all he did was win in the ring and join a scant handful of ring immortals in retiring undefeated with his title.
Monzon was probably more honest and true to himself by not putting up a false "good guy" front, with a phony, fake smile, like so many other assholes of the sport were known to do.
My perception of Ruben Olivares life and times are exactly the same, the complete lack of media of any kind made about the mans incredible life... I'm not quite sure what I'm missing. Same goes for Bobby Chacon, but that's getting a bit off topic I guess. You've had some great, home run posts in this thread as well, cobra. The only reason I keep checking into this thread to be honest!
Sadly, it almost seems like the majority of boxing greats are serious assholes and in general bad people. The good ones seem to be the exception...
Thank you Russell, and there have indeed been some great threads lately...and when I get a bellyful of this back and forth, stupid, insult driven crap,...as with the Lounge in another well known "boxing" forum, I just shake the dirt from my feet and basically give it a "nuff said"...and you know who I'm referring to lol,...I don't hafta name no names...and I remember that there are many great posters, like yourself, and others here whom I enjoy no end...and that's why I keep coming back here!
