Yes Witherspoons Can opener was a fave with him later in his career , but i do remember that Tim had great ammo in both hands.. Very underrated heavyweight, always looked underconditioned but was a solid guy..........
not a heavyweight but lightweight champ lew jenkins was basically a one hand fighter ...dudes right was like the hand of god
...my immediate thought when i looked at the title for this thread was max baer....so i'm going with those who picked him..max had no left hook, no left jab and the only punched he landed with his left were back hands, and it' fun to see him on film arguing with the referee, and againsr braddock he even argued with braddock's corner! he did use his left hand for defense, in a crossed arm stance.
What about wlad from todays era?,he sometimes jabs people to sleep in the ring(and sadly some people out of the ring to)
Well, Wlad knocked out Austin with a left hook and Thompson with a right. If you call that one handed.
But that was, it Whitherspoon was anything but solid! He went from arguably a career best winning performance (Bruno TKO11); to four/five months later losing in under 90 seconds to a late sub in Bonecrusher; a man Tim had beaten comfortable some 18 months previous...
what are you talking about? floyd had a great right hand. he destroyed a very sturdy henry cooper with a single shot to the chin. barely a one armed puncher
Earnie Shavers had an extremely dangerous left hand. His jab closed Henry Clark's right eye in their first match, and his left hook was the punch which initially stunned Norton. He also dropped Ron Lyle with a devastating hook. He had his share of one punch knockouts produced by the left. Max Baer briefly battered Joe Louis against the ropes, making him wince with multiple first round hooks. He and Schmeling also displayed fine jabs against one another. Granted, these can be argued as exceptional instances. For another such exception, Joe Frazier's long right cross ripped open Jerry Quarry's face in their rematch, resulting in Jerry turning away and forcing referee Louis to stop the contest. In their rubber match, Floyd came off the deck for a second time to instantly drop Ingo with the first short sharp right he shot out. Patterson's leaping hook was a spectacular looking work of balletomanic art, but there's plenty of footage showing him dispatching opponents with that deadly cross, as quick and short a straight right as I've seen any great heavyweight demonstrate. Gerry Cooney worked very hard to develop his atrophic right arm, and it was a right hand which he initially stunned Norton with. He dug his right into the body very well (much like Frazier), but usually did look somewhat awkward and uncomfortable going upstairs with it. Coetzee, Knoetze and Ingo are classic answers for me, right handed punchers working out of the orthodox stance.
Is there any single other instance tho of a Cooney right hand doing anything? Very poor punch IMO for his level.
