Greater Light-Heavyweight : Greb or Tunney ?

I agree with you that Tunney looks great on film, but these films are from a few years later and Tunney might have improved his game over 1922. In fact, that is what observers at the time wrote.

 

And a pivitol point to include is that while Tunney impoved his game, the Windmill started to regress with a slowing body and degrading vision.

 

The thing that bugs me about Tunney on film is that he had a bit of that stiff, fully extended jab going on instead of snapping it from the shoulder ... almost like Corbett against Courtney ...

 

how many 200lb + heavyweights did Tunney fight? how many punchers in general did tunney fight of his era? That was not dempseys best combination. that was an old dempsey combination.



While I think Tunney looks good, I think he demonstrates more flaws on film than say Billy Conn, Ezzard Charles, Archie Moore, Harold Johnson, and Bob Foster.

I don't remember any fights where Greb stepped up at lightheavy except the Tunney's fights.

 

Tunney was in bed for a week after the first fight,Grebs butt happened at the opening of the first round ,he threw in a lot of borderline punches in this fight too,it must have been some scrap.It's a tragedy we won't ever see it.Benny Leonard told Tunney to fire short punches up the middle to Greb's chest and mid- riff,the same strategy was employed with success by Tommy Loughran.Good post by the way!

 

Many reports state that Grebs first punch of the fight, a straight right, was the one that did the damage. They also accuse Tunney of being as dirty as Greb. As for Loughran having success against Greb thats laughable. He got 1 decision and a draw which many of his hometown papers felt should have gone to Greb. This was when Greb was past his prime. Other than that Greb whipped Loughran handily.

The first Greb Loughran fight was recorded by the Pittsburgh Post as a close fight,,they gave Loughran the first 2 rds Greb the next 5,and Loughran the last 3,Loughran was 21 and the ligter man by2 lbs.The second fightthe ref gave a draw one jude voted fot Tommy one for Greb,Greeb forced the action but loughran scored well to the midriff friom long range,according to the Pittsburgh Post.The third fight ,the Post gaveGreb 5rds Loughran 3 and 2 even ,Loughran nearly dropped Greb in the 5th.Thats Grebs local papers account.So what's laughable about ,my statement that Loughran 's strategy was employed with success? The Pittsburg paper evidently didnt think Greb whipped Loughran handily,and remember Lloughran was 21 and 22 when he fought GREB,not yet mature or in his prime.All account Ive read said the trilogy of fights were close,.NONE INCLUDING PITTSBURGH PAPERS SAY GREB WON HANDILY.
