We move on to voting for the best Round 7 of all time. You can check the results of Round 1-6 voting on the master thread and nominate Rounds 8-15 here: https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/let’s-create-the-perfect-fight-round-by-round.648592/ Ground rules: This fight is going the distance, so each nominated round has to go the full three minutes — so something like the 12th round of Chavez-Taylor I is not eligible. All weight divisions are eligible. And in rounds where the participants faced each other more than once, please specific which fight. Gloved era only. And importantly, this should be about the best rounds not the most historically significant. Voting will be set to stay open for three days. Here are the nominees: Akita Yaegashi-Pornsawan Porpramook (watch from beginning) This content is protected Dave Boy Green-Andy Price (fast forward to 9:30) This content is protected Arturo Gatti-Micky Ward III (fast forward to 31:10) This content is protected Evander Holyfield-George Foreman (fast forward to 22:27) This content is protected Mando Ramos-Sugar Ramos (fast forward to 29:10) This content is protected Carmen Basilio-Tony DeMarco II (watch from start) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WNR2OQRVbm0 Roberto Duran-Iran Barkley (fast forward to 38:55) https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3zqrxZOpVY
Well, these selections were all straight fire. 7) Carmen Basilio vs Tony DeMarco: this really only got exciting in the last 30 seconds. Still, it was a TENSE 30 seconds. 6) Dave Boy Green-Andy Price: aggression vs counter-punching is the classic battle of boxing, and this was good fun, though not anywhere near the excitement of the other bouts, or really of #7's last 30 seconds. 5) Foreman vs Holyfield: Arguably the two heaviest hands in the heavyweight division at the time throwdown, only to discover they were attached to the most granite chins in the heavyweight division. I still have no idea how Holyfield took George's shots only to come back with that insane bajillion punch combination, and likewise, I have no idea how George survived that. 4) Arturo Gatti-Micky Ward III - Perhaps the second-best round these two absolute madlads ever fought. No f's given, going ahead, and smash-smash-smashing. 'Hurt' a bit because by this time Gatti had figured Ward out enough that even boxing primarily one-handed he had the advantage. 3) Ramos vs Ramos - from here on it's the three rounds I had the most trouble deciding and ultimately went in this order. The two Ramos' turn it up and trade the advantage back and forth, hurting each other at least once each during the round. Some high level, quality stuff. 2) Akita Yaegashi-Pornsawan Porpramook - You like rock 'em, sock 'em robots? I like rock 'em, sock 'em robots. You like this round. 1.) Duran vs Barkley - Okay, this is a bit cheap on multiple fronts: I nominated this round, and it is my favorite fight. But, damn it, rounds like this are the reason why. They nail each other, they rock each other, they set up punches beautifully with defensive weaving and inside game. This is skill, gut-check, and brutality all displayed in 180 seconds. Even with that shithead Al Bernstein clearly cheerleading one side on and very reluctantly giving the other their props ("could this be his last stand" remains one of the most infuriatingly insulting comments ever made in sports). And then, the moment that made it for me; the very end, when both men stared each other down, promising the other that more of the same was waiting for them. God DAMN but I love this fight.
Round 7 Wow - this was probably the hardest to choose a winner so far. Not a dud in the bunch in my view. All seven of these were worthy candidates but two stood out as just that bit better than the others. 7. Holyfield-Foreman Terrific two way action, particularly for a heavyweight fight but it slowed down over the second half and there was a fair bit of holding (again, relative to the other rounds) 6. Basilio-DeMarco 2 Tough for me to see one of my favourite fights ever near the bottom of the list. An excellent round in its own right with one key moment of high drama and part of a brilliant, brilliant fight but just not quite as good as some of the others taken in isolation. 5 Gatti-Ward 3 Tremendous round that had an amazing first 2 minutes before it slowed a bit due to both fighters getting tired and then Gatti took back control. 4. Yaegashi-Pornaswan Maybe a round that I didn't necessarily enjoy as much as some of the others due to my lack of familiarity with both fighters but a hard, hard round with no quarter given. 3. Duran-Barkley Great round from a great fight in which Duran and Barkley traded evenly from the start. The contrast in styles between the two fighters is part of what makes this fight and this round so enjoyable. Just edged out some very good rounds for the third spot. 2. Price-Green I had zero expectations of this one going in but it was a revelation! Non stop action for three minutes fought at an unrelenting pace. This was so nearly my pick. 1. Ramos-Ramos This is the third of four nominations for this fight. The final nomination is for round 9 which I suspect it will have its work cut out against some of the others, so I voted for it here, but it deserves it without a doubt. The only reason this edged Price-Green was the overall quality of the fighters and action on display - it was just that bit higher - but it was very close. The pace in this one set it apart from some of the others in the list, plus you had momentum swings throughout the round and trading at the bell. Just a great round.
7 Basilio-DeMarco 6 Gatti -Ward 5 Yaegashi-Pornaswan 4 Ramos-Ramos 3 Holyfield-Foreman 2 Green-Price 1 Barclay-Duran
First of all, 7 fantastic rounds to enjoy and it would be great for everyone to get involved in this. I felt out of breath by the time I watched these. Secondly, 3 fights immediately rose to the top for me. Green-Price, Ramos-Ramos and Duran-Barkley. IMO, these 3 really epitomizes what we are looking for. I had to re-watch all three a second time to pick what I felt was the best. If I could have made 3 choices I would have, which was the kind of fine line I saw between these 3. In the end, I went with Green v Price, which was quite literally 3 full minutes of hard-core action. A great 7th round for all 14 combatants nominated.
Same for me: it came down to Ramos v. Ramos, Hawk v. Davey Boy and Duran v. Barkley. I went with Roberto-Iran because fo the skill level, sustained action and ferocity — either could hurt the other and did. BTW, I love the discussion, especially with people ranking all the rounds in order and giving their observations. Nice stuff. Have to disagree with @Stiff Jab on Bernstein — watch the fight as a whole and at that point Barkley was starting to take over and Duran’s punch output and effectiveness had dipped ... who knew the old man still had 12 rounds in him at that pace at 160 against a monster-sized guy? He was calling what he saw as it happened and questioning if Duran wasn’t making what would turn out to be a last gasp was reasonable.
I respectfully disagree about Bernstein's 'commentary' but will admit my opinion as a Duran-fanboy may be coloring my opinion. All I will say after re-watching the fight is DAMN why didn't I nominate the 4th & 5th rounds? T_T
This content is protected Amazing action, literally just a three minute punch up. I like both of these two, but Akira was clearly more talented, and it shows here. This content is protected Oh my days... this is like the last one but with quicker, harder punches. Both men could feel these shots, and there wasn't a shortage of them! This content is protected Can't lie, got my hopes up here. I thought this'd be like other note-worthy rounds from this is series, it wasn't. Sure, it was high action early on, but after a minute and a half, Gatti had took over and kept it more at range. This content is protected Good round, nothing crazy IMO. Holyfield did string together some amazing combo's, but there was more holding here and it was (comparatively) one-way traffic. This content is protected I actually took the liberty of watching the whole fight, since it's without question a classic. Sugar hurt, but Mando punches himself out, only to have the fight took back to him. So many punches, such a high skill-level. This content is protected Fun round, from one of my favourite WWs, but it's mostly one-way traffic and Carmen was in control for most of the time. This content is protected Very fun round with a high workrate and high skill-level (from Duran, at any rate). I liked this one, both men three consistently and the fight, as a whole, is my pick for the best mentioned here. _______________________ Rankings: #7. Basilio-DeMarco II #6. Gatti-Ward III #5. Holyfield-Foreman #4. Duran-Barkley #3. Yaegashi-Pornaswan #2. Ramos-Ramos #1. Green-Price God, this one was even harder to rank than #5. I had it figured that I'd pick Yaegashi-Pornaswan without a doubt. Clearly not! I'm Looking forward to the next one. It should be interesting to see everyone pick Saad/Lopez II, and what comes next (probably Saad/Lopez I ).
Very difficult to score these awesome 7th rounders. The top 3 were Duran-Barkley, Ramos-Ramos, and Green - Price. I went with Green - Price, excellent balanced all action.
