Ali vs Liston, or Tyson v Douglas? Where does Bivols win over Canelo rate in modern times? How about Barkley over Hearns? .
Robinson was 129-1 and he had avenged that one lost five times. Turpin was not well known and was just seen as another victim in Robinson's world wide tour. Robinson was in the middle of his prime when Turpin beat him, Liston was not when Ali beat him. Robinson is a top 5 middleweight all time, Liston is not a top 5 heavyweight all time. Obviously Ali-Liston 1 is a great upset but Robinson-Turpin 1 is greater imo.
Ok. Ray was 30. Those days athletes were washed up by 30 - 32. So in context, SRR was past his prime by then. Unfortunately there is very little (no) footage of Robinson at his peak. No film for his 1st hundred fights or something. We cant even see him at his peak unfortunately.
https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/sugar-ray-robinson-prime-footage.659399/ The no prime footage thing is a myth. No idea why that hasn't died yet. Also prime isn't just age. Different fighters age differently. Robinson was absolutely at or near his peak when he fought Turpin. Robinson first fight when he was past prime was against Joe Rindone. That's because he was coming out of a three year retirement.
My pick for biggest upset is a pretty much unknown fight. It wasn't for a world title and featured just one known fighter. In 1953, the current world champion and future Hall of Famer, Kid Gavilan met occasional fringe contender Danny Womber in a non-title fight. Womber won a unanimous ten round decision. In and of itself, that's a pretty big upset but nothing truly stunning. Here is what makes it an amazing upset. That was Gavilan's only loss during a run of 36 fights and Womber's only win over a span of 12 fights. That for me, is the biggest boxing upset I know of.
Since I don't feel like flipping a coin I'm just gonna mention my personal favorite upset of all time. It's not the greatest or biggest but it's my favorite fighter of all time winning against all odds. If anyone hasn't seen this fight yet I highly recommend it. This content is protected
Never knew about this one. That's a really good pick. I'm so glad we have a good amount of footage of Kid Gavilan. What a fun fighter to watch.
Maselino Masoe over Evans Ashira was my favourite. Though not quite on the scale of ALI, Douglas etc.
Willy Wise beating Chavez Sr in what was supposed to be a tuneup was upset of the year in 1999. This content is protected
Sanchez vs. Gomez was a huge upset in its time. Tomas Molinares vs Starling except it was changed to a nc. McCall vs Lewis 1 De Jesus vs Duran 1
Bivol - Canelo was only a slight upset. I can't remember for sure but Nelo' was the betting favourite I think so I guess you'd still consider it an upset. It's not like he appeared unbeatable before facing Bivol though.
