Does anyone know of rare fights that exist, that are not in the Jacobs library currently owned by Espn? Scarce matches in the hands of serious collectors perhaps or for some reason just not made available to the public.
I know this can be a sensitive subject from reading some threads, if someone could PM me if they don't wish to divulge too much information on a public forum. I'm just interested in the subject, especially when it pertains to Greb although I am aware his fight doesn't seem to be in possession of anyone that is known at this time.
    Any info is Much appreciated.

Ok thanks, I know from threads you're a serious collector. I commend you on your diligence finding these films. Must be a labor of love, i'm just trying to piece together an idea about the film collecting community as a whole. I never realized it's as vast as it is. Keep up the good work, fingers crossed you find a Greb one day I know it would mean a lot.

I dont know all of the fights in the collection. I know a lot, and a lot of others that arent in the collection (from personal inquiries) and I have a list that was sent to me several years ago of the fights from the collection that ESPN thinks they own the rights to (they dont own the rights to many of the ones on the list but its instructive) The list does not encompass the entire collection. The thing to remember is that the idea about the Jacobs/Cayton collection is sort of stuck in a time warp. People have this idea that there are all of these rare treasures in it. Im sure there are some but back before Jacobs and Cayton starting televising this stuff and selling it commercial it was indeed like the Ark of the Covenant and Holy Grail combined. But over the years the vast majority of what was extremely rare and unseen is now common place. Today we dont think of Willard-Johnson, Corbett-Fitzsimmons, etc as being extremely rare but at one time, when this collection got its rep, they were. I think very few people would find any real surprises in the collection today. There are some to be sure but I dont think anything like what many people believe.

How many films are in the collection and are they all catalogued?

I think there are many fights in the collection that have not been rebroadcast in 30 plus years. Perhaps the most famous fights have been seen, but there could be some good ones that feature contenders that I would consider rare.

The collection is catalogued, I dont know how big it is.

You hit the nail on the head. Probably the more interesting "rare" fights that MIGHT be found in the collection would kinescopes and broadcast tapes from the late 1950s thru the 1970s. I still believe there arent a lot of these that havent wormed their way into the public but there are some, I know that for a fact.

I would imagine that Greb boxing film existed, even if just a clip but why it did not surface as of yet makes me doubt it.

there must be HUNDREDS of great and rare footage lost and simply just 'unknown' that it 'might' still be out there...

I just found an EBAY listing of Photographic Plates of Wood**** and my old granddad, that the guy is advertising as "Probably" the only ones left in the world - he's "probably" right, there is probably no more out there that survived.

and that is the point, Loads will be lost to the trash bin or decay, BUT just like these plates his Father in Law died and they emptied out his Loft and low and behold a good Boxing collection including these Photographic Plates!

I'd say Greb and others are out there in the hands of the likes of this family.

some will have been trashed, some 'might' make it to market, But Loads must still be in the hands of such unassuming people!

Who is your grandad? My grandad used to drink with former british heavyweight champion Jack London? Just curious as you mentioned the stills of Wood**** and your grandad?
