"Fighting Jim" didn't pan out as much in the long run. Tony said he had no punch and passed the message back to I think it was Teddy Brenner that he wouldn't go very far. Proved correct, which is why Tony became a pretty successful matchmaker and trainer for many years. The "West Coast Boxing Thread" over on BoxRec has lots of inside and personal stories about guys taking dives. Just read that Mike Nixon threw the Rossman rematch to pay off gambling debts. Quite a few more examples sprinkled in the midst of other fascinating stories and remembrances.
Herbie Hide took a dive against Vitali He went over when the punch never landed check it out clearly no punch lands even ringsiders were shocked. Also think Hayes last.opponent tried to take the dive but was booed in shame and got up, but a hell of an attempt
I think he went down from a jab right that didn't even land? Clearly either he took a dive because just didn't want to get hit or maybe he was paid too. In any case he went down from a punch that didn't land.
I'm not sure Cawley actually dove on the second to last knockdown. Obviously the punch didn't touch him, but he's so clumsy that he maybe just fell down avoiding the punch. The final knockdown though...looks like he got hit with a hard straight jab to the face and just decided he'd had enough and threw himself down.
Ah, there's a classic. Not going to rewatch to verify, but isn't Rahman himself embarrassed in that fight?
I didn't think it was a dive by Buster Douglas against Evander Holyfield as it appeared to be a legitimate right hand by Holyfield that caught him but the way that Douglas lay down on the floor, wiping his face with his glove and checking for blood but making no real effort to get up, did make me think twice.
He probably was. Cawley actually landed possibly the best punch of the fight, a nice little right hand on Rahman, and then Cawley was the one who fell. Just awful.

Not only that but Scott shows up to the weigh in visibly undertrained and flabby looking as if he couldn't be bothered. I remember a lot of people fearing that that fight was going to be a dive even before it happened, me being one of them. When it actually happened it was almost comical how blatant it was, and while the replay showed that the left did land around Scott's guard no way was it hard enough to have knocked him down like that and kept him down. Scott of course doesn't give a toss about it either way. It was a farce from start to finish.
