Something must be up with Guzman. It's not as if he's carrying extra flab, he's ripped. How can a former super bantam fail to make the light welter weight limit?
Mandanda in all fairness, Castillo should have had the beating of Corrales in their first encounter. The weight probably helped him a little in the rematch but Castillo was better in the first and was pretty much cheated out of a victory. Can't blame Corrales but stil......
9 pound overweight **** Guzman thats a joke too come in at that. Funeka has some balls doing this again after last time
Don't see how the weight will help Guzman. He ain't gonna bully and outstrength Funeka in a million years. If he was that type of fighter it might help. But he will lose some speed and it suggests he hasn't trained that well at all. Funeka is a bigger favorite now.
I don't think so...he's usually outstrengthed, above featherweight anyway. Soto had more strength than him and pushed him back, but he outboxed him. Funeka seemed to have more strength in the first fight. I don't think weight is going to help a guy whos primary asset is speed and boxing ability.
Guzman will probably just come in at his usual fighting weight. He just didn't bother with the dehydration thing and why should he?
Jose Nunez has spoken to Malcom Marley at the Examiner and aired his frustrations surrounding the 9 pound weight disaster ahead of Guzman's fight with Ali Funeka tonight at the Hard Rock cafe in Las Vegas. His manager has stated that he is extremely disappointed with the duo of trainer Lee Beard and nutritional expert, Kerry Kayes. Nunez believes that Guzman weighed just a single pound less than his arrival weight of 145 last week. "Kerry told me and Guzman that it was 100 percent he would make the weight here. Guzman, if he keeps fighting, will now go to 140 pounds. Guzman had his confidence back. He did whatever they told him to do in England and over here as well." "Kerry, he told me he was sorry, so sorry, but I told him I don't want to hear it." "It was a stupid decision for me to hire these guys,” Nunez told Marley. "Just stupid. They had him training in England and told me not to worry about weight. They told Joan the same thing. He trained hard. Joan told me he trained better because he was focused on training and not on the weight." "If he can't fight this fight, he can hang it up. These guys, especially Kayes, had him drinking water all the time, even just before the weigh in. He was drinking eight bottles of water but they said don't worry about it. "Kayes has something he calls a sauna suit and they said they could take 15-20 pounds off, that they did it with Ricky Hatton all the time, in one day. They said it was water weight and it would roll off. "Kayes brought the sauna suit over here and then told us he couldn't make it work because of the different voltage here. So they put Guzman in the hotel sauna bath, something he isn't used to. So Guzman stays in the sauna for an hour and a half but that's all he can take of that." Guzman weighed 160+ pounds when arriving in Manchester and had a big task to shift such a large volume of mass with less than a full camp to prepare for what many regard as an extremely quickly organised rematch. Guzman's time with Beard will prove crucial tonight and the proof will be in the pudding. If Guzman's skills are as improved as we are lead to be believed then perhaps the relationship between Beard and Guzman shall be retained.
Yeah that's very true. I hope Funeka deals with the extra weight...really Guzman has to get close to make it effective and last time he couldn't so i still fancy Funeka to win.
Fight is on, both fighters weighed in again this morning. Guzman came in at 148.2, Funeka at 143.2 Title on the line for Funeka only who will receive an extra $20-25,000. Guzman will be fined 25% of his purse. Source is the scene.
