I think you always should be careful of drawing too much conclusion from one fight. Otherwise you might be just as tempted to use Ali's fight against D. Jones as proof that Ali would have no chance in hell against Louis.

But in Louis case, slick movers seemed to give Louis some trouble generally. Not only Conn, but also Farr and Walcott. Good as those all were, prime Ali was a different animal completely.

Imo Walcott was about as good as Ali in terms of footwork.

You think he was as hard to hit? I would seriously doubt that. He also didn't possess Ali's chin.

I would make Ali a clear favorite here. His speed, toughness and movement would be hard to handle.

I would make huge, strong punchers like Foreman, Liston and even a focused Lennox Lewis likely candidates to beat him, as well as Gene Tunney, a brilliant tactician.

Tyson can outbomb him early, but i still favor Louis over Frazier or Marciano.

Agreed, Walcott had fancy footwork the equal of Ali. But, in addition to not having Ali's chin, Walcott didn't have Ali's speed, sense of timing and adaptability. This makes Ali a different animal.

The best fighters Joe Louis fought were Max Schemling, Joe Walcott, Max Baer, Ezzard Charles, and Rocky Marciano.

Of the above names, only Marciano stacks up with fighters you mentioned.

If you correctly give Walcott the first fight on points, Louis ring record vs the best fighters he fought was only 3 wins and 4 losses.

Translation, Louis isn't a slam dunk vs the best all time greats. In fact, I think his average chin, slow feet, and suspect defense would really cost him in other eras.

I think it would be win some lose some for Louis.
