I scored it 116-114, probably about 20 years ago. Seen it about six times in total. I could watch it another sixty times and still not score for Hagler. Never rated it very highly as a fight., so not sure why I've sat through it a few times.

I rate the fight an "exhibition". Ray wouldn't fight Hagler until he was basically finished. Hagler tries to outbox SRL right-handed the first 3-4 rds and loses those. Ray does all that 1 minute "shoe shining" to steal rds apparently. Ray in track shoes for a lot of the fight. Somehow the judges forgot Hagler was the Champ and Ray had to take the title from him. Ray won the fight......I just would have liked to have seen Ray try pulling that type of stuff with Gene Fullmer, with Fullmer in there kicking ass and taking names.
I just re-scored this fight last week! I don't have the round by round assessment in front of me, but I had the fight a draw at 6 rounds a piece.
i have always scored it to marvin but i can see why you could score it to Leonard but for me he didnt do enough to take a title from hagler also i think it would have been more controversial if Hagler had won
Other than the fact that a draw means the champion keeps his title a challenger doesn't have to "take the title" from a champion, he just needs to win more rounds.
I don't remember Leonard winning the first four rounds. I do remember Hagler dominating the fight from the fifth round on. I had Hagler safely out in front by the end. The scoring was a real shocker. I don't see what the reasoning if for Leonard having won. Hagler was the aggressor. He made the fight. He was mixing shots to the body and the head. He landed the harder shots. He had Leonard in trouble a few times and had Leonard holding on. Leonard was showboating and fouling a lot, fighting in spurts. He made Hagler look awkward at times, but Hagler was way past his prime. All in all, a boring fight. It's not one I care to watch again. If you want to watch close and exciting fights, watch Julio Ceasar Chavez and Juan LaPorte. Or how about Alexis Arguello and Jose Luis Ramirez. Thems some scraps right there.
Hagler rarely put 2-3-4 punches together effectively. IMO, Hagler wasn't particularly effective with his aggression on a regular basis. Pretty close fight. When he did land it was usually one hard blow at a time. The 9th round sums up Hagler's performance for me. He has Leonard pinned against the ropes and who was there for the taking. His handspeed is well below par and his timing isn't good either. Unable to capitalize when he should have done.
