Well, of the areas I compared them, I favoured Hagler in 5, GGG in 1, with 1 even. So clear edge to Hagler. Tbf, I did say they were close in many of the areas I favoured Hagler. I rank Hagler #3 all time at MW and GGG #13, based solely on their respective records in their own eras. I'd see the gap between how good they were, as smaller than the gap based on what they achieved, yes.
They are / were. GGG is a bit bigger, not much. Over 12 rounds, I think Hagler wins a close decision.
Besides Robinson Hagler was thee greatest middle weight of the time.He fought the greatest of the 1980's Hearns (3 rounds & rewarded as the greatest middle weight fight of all time.) Duran decision.Leonard which i think he won but was stolen from him.3 legendary greats right there.Hearns was a bigger puncher than GGG & after being hurt early Hagler walked through Hearns best.I rank GGG in the top 10 middle weights all time but not the top 5.
I rank GGG 10th all time Middle weight & Hagler 2nd Only Robinson better.Robinson fought & won the middle weight belt when there was only one belt to fight for which means you had to fight the best to win it & defend against the best.Robinson won the middle weight belt 5 times & the first time he was already 29 years old & the last he was 37.Hagler defended it 12 consecutive times & had he not been robbed in the leonard fight would probably broken Monzons record of 14 at the time.Hopkins 3rd greatest.Monzon 4th.
GGG much bigger?? GGG was 5'10 & Hagler 5'9 & a half.Had they fought Hagler walks through anything GGG can throw & earns a late round stoppage.GGG was a good middle weight Hagler was a great Middle weight & all you have to do is look at their opponents they fought.
First, I didn't say GGG was "much bigger." In fact, I said he "..a bit bigger, not much." Second, when we talk " bigger" in boxing, Cyril, we are NOT taking height. If height were the determinant, then Paul Williams would have been bigger than Mike Tyson as he was three inches taller. And Ryan Garcia would be bigger than Canelo as he is a couple of inches taller. So 5' 9'' and 5' 10" don't count when deciding who is bigger. There are no height divisions, but there are weight divisions. Both Hagler and Golovkin fought at Middleweight. But in Hagler's day, they had same day weigh-in. In Golovkins, boxers weighed in the previous day, allowing them an extra day to rehydrate, and come into the ring heavier than earlier middleweights. Marvin came into the ring around 163 - 165, GGG at 173 -175. I did mention that I favoured Hagler to win, but based on him having an edge in skill. Both men had iron chins and top shelf power. IMO, it would have been a good, close fight that would probably have gone the distance.
They are actually kind of similar in many ways, being orthodox boxers that based their game off the jab. I think there's an important note to be made here, in that Hagler was significantly lighter due to the different weigh in rules. Hagler to me seems faster and more fluid, and of course he is famous for being able to switch hit. Golovkin is more of a tank in how he sets up his stance and closes the ring off. He hits quite a bit harder to my mind and even though he seems more robotic he has a variety of punches that aren't often seen, such as that wierd uppercut that he throws from the side and the famous skull compactor punch that frankly should not be effective but is. I think their footwork is equally good but in slightly different ways. GGG has the EE footwork where he uses space to muffle attacks and to keep the fight at the right distance for him. Physically they are both A+ and top of the shelf. Stamina-wise Hagler could turn up the heat a bit better when he had to but Golovkin's measured approach means that he's never tired in a match.
I understand the science on height, bone & body mass. The reason they change the weigh in for champion ship fights was because of the ray mancini-Kim fight in which Kim died.Hagler fought the better fighters & beat them.Of Haglers 3 losses 2 could be considered robberies.Hagler had a chin of Iron he was one of the greatest boxer-puncher combo in boxing history.Had they fought each other today in their prime both would have time to put weight on although i do not see Hagler rehydrating 12 pounds he still wins. You are putting a good middle weight up against a great middle weight there is a big difference.
Thanks Cyril. I have Monzon & Greb above Hagler, with SRR 4th, based purely on fights contested at & around MW. I have SRR #1 p4p, though, and Greb #2.
I have Greb 5th.You bring up these older boxers which tells me you are a true boxing fan. These boxing fans of today & I am talking about late teens-20 plus see & watch the boxers of today like GGG & think WOW he is the great middle weight of all time with out the knowledge of even watching the older fights of past, not saying all just some.I think GGG was a really good middle & have him 10th on the greatest middle weights all time.Very interested in where you would put him among all time MW.Thanks Cy
