"A" level prospect for sure. Real deal? Probably not. He definitely lacks that thudding power Teofimo has for example. The power you can see when he hurts guys just throwing punches to the gloves.
People are over-reacting massively to Saturday. What ACTUALLY happened? He outboxed a top level LW for 9 rounds. He got buzzed by a good shot, but didn't go down. He showed he has elite level skills and can take a decent shot and not get dropped. Hes 22. People are writing him off way too early.
He's no ko artist but he has enough power to keep people honest like pbf had. His boxing ability is the best at 135 other than loma. Yeah he's the real deal a fraud would have lost to Linares that's what people keep forgetting. If I was his trainer I'd tell him box to his strengths and forget about trying to be more aggressive and impress people who won't like you anyway.
Thank God you're not a judge because he won 9 rounds in that fight it would have been a robbery to give it to Linares. The right man won the fight it was clear.
He was a lot more than buzzed. He rattled. It carried over for two rounds. When you have to run in to grab two rounds later, it’s not a good look at all. It’s hardly an overreaction.
Haney has real skill. Just needs to keep it moving out of the pocket when fighting elite level comp. he has to keep his hands up when he does choose to hang out in the pocket & not trade with his opp unless he has them seriously buzzed. 1,2 combo tops & move. if he does this he will be more then competitive in this LW division.
if he fights the top guys, they arent just gonna let haney just style on em all night. all of em got pride and quick tempers. and they got speed and power. how long do you think haneys slaps will contain them? what happens when they decide to just drop sustained lightning bombs any time haney throws his safe jab? how long do you think haneys heart gonna keep him throwing punches when he gets canelo style return fire every time he takes a shot? it would be something else if the situation was more like " i know if i touch him ill hurt him, but his power could easily hurt me too, i got to not get careless". they are gonna happily trade with him. as a matter of fact, all the top fighters he faces from now on will be looking to trade with him at every opportunity. nobody is gonna try to outbox him. they are gonna pressure him and throw punches in bunches. dont give him the time and space to execute his gym drills on you.
facts Don’t favor him to beat the top guys Teófimo Tank would likely walk him down & KO him. he MIGHT be able to decisión García & I do think he loses to Loma. He has a “runners chance” Is all that I am saying.
That's easier said than done for one haney punches hard enough and sharp enough to get respect. He hits you with punches you dont see. Second Haney when he boxes smart defensively and he's not there to be hit there's not much that his opponents can do to counter it. Kinda like pbf who always held the trump card that if he played anytime and that was to get on his bike and fight off his back foot for 12 rounds using his superior foot and hand speed and reflexes to make his opponent look befuddled. Guys like Teo are great but they can be outboxed.
Haney clearly very talented , but as many have mentioned the lack of power is a concern Look at Linares 5 previous defeats and the manner they came about in and then see how Haney won And that's against an even more shop worn , inactive version this really was meant to be his break out fight , it was signed with that intention lets not kid ourselves and the final two rounds will be more of a talking point than his deserved victory Its a concern but not a huge concern as you really have to factor in the fact he is in his early twenties But he and his team have put him in a position of title holder and one that runs his mouth a lot so when things don't go to plan or as smooth as they hoped, then expect the naysayers to come out
The judges thought that was some kind of close fight Saturday, even if no one else did. I think he needs to keep developing that more offensive style he was showing otherwise he's going to be on the wrong end of some controversial decisions.
To be clear & the bottom line of what should be taken from the Linares test is this: The reason Haney got rocked is because after the 6th he made the conscious decision to walk Linares down & take chances on the inside & go for a KO, Feeling that he had weakened the old vet. It was a mistake , obviously as Linares is still a dangerous puncher he was ready & in great shape to go all 12. It could have cost him the fight. But it didn’t. Doubtful that he will risk fighting this way again. He will most likely choose the safety 1st route & stay boxing off of the back foot. & he has shown that he does have the skills & conditioning to do just that. Now wether he can do that against the elite competition in the division & get the W remains to be witnessed. but it’s entirely possible. Is it Likely? I sure as hell wouldn’t bet on it ... But We shall see.
