Harry Greb fighting today would not be an ATG, why?

Going by his resume I can't see how Greb would NOT do well in any era. Granted, he doesn't sound like he is the biggest puncher but Calzaghe (who sounds similar in may ways) had great success despite that.

Dempsey123 made some good arguments earlier on (despite his lack of knowledge of the paragraph ;) ) and so I'd like to offer some counterpoints. Active, flurry punchers that are dynamic in the ring look good and I think would be very marketable. Certainly a refreshing change from the boring safety-first types that have been cropping up. Furthermore, the additional weight divisions mean that he'd be able to stick to a narrower weight class instead of giving up weight to bigger men. Frankly I'd put money on him chasing a Golovkin fight, because if he wasn't scared of Jack frickin Dempsey he wouldn't be scared of GGG. Now, that would be worth seeing.

Lol you're right paragraphs, and quote, I am not a writer, trying though. Greb and GGG whoa, that now is a PPV fight worthie of being called a PPV. And for icing on the cake watching it in HD

I think the old Greb would slap GGG around, one of Grebs ring strategies was never letting a puncher get set. Most punchers need to get set before they throw hard. GGG is the type of fighter that is a stalker applying steady pressure. Greb would drive GGG crazy with his jumping around, being here, there and everywhere, forcing GGG to just throw. To the Greb of 300 fights, GGG is just a beginner. Now, Greb coming up now, wouldn't be having the advantage of experience, they would be about equal in pro experience, I would have to pick GGG. Idk for a fact but Greb's style was unique to him and which I believe he learned by trial and error over many fights. Greb, now I don't know if he would've had the same style as old Greb.

Today Greb would have a higher KO percent because they stop fights a lot sooner. Before you could be half dead from the 3rd and battered to the 15th.

    Greb would be dominant.

DW, you have a point there but remember today they use 10oz gloves back then 5-6oz gloves. You box, is there a difference between 14oz and 16oz gloves besides the weight? I am talking about how they feel when you get hit. The lower the glove weigh's the harder the impact. The heavier the gloves the less impact.
BTW, how's your boxing coming along?

Problem with Greb was his constant holding and hitting. Fleischer wrote that Greb held and hit in every bout he ever had. One has to wonder whether Greb would be able to deal with the more stringent modern rules.

Because of his innate toughness, amazing hand speed, lust for combat and
unparaleld unworldly stamina, Harry greb today fighting with 4 weeks or so rest to nurse his wounds would be considered unbeatable with what his competition
of today brought to the ring...Virtually all his top opponents called him the greatest fighter they ever fought and no less than Jack Dempsey opined "Harry greb was the fastest man he ever saw ", why he's even faster than Benny Leonard a lightweight"...The great Jack Johnson just retired boxed with Harry Greb, and said "you are the fastest man I ever saw'. Heady words indeed...
What 160 pound fighter can you name that tackled so many great HOFers of all weights time and again with such amazing success ?...He had cujones for sure...

It would be very interesting to see him in today's era. The eras were so different so I would be curious to see how he adapts to modern style boxing.

I've read up a lot on Greb and find him and Robinson to be the most fascinating fighters in the history of the sport. Unfortunately, very little video footage of him exists so most of what I know about him is based off newspaper clips and biographies. He was very fast handed and threw a high volume of punches. But he was also quite notorious for being a very dirty fighter. I don't know how those specific tactics would translate in todays era and if it would handicap him.

But based off what I know of the guy, his ridiculous resume and the fact he took on literally all comers from all weight classes, I imagine he would probably be the best MW and SMW in the world today. This is a guy that beat a great MW fighter (Walker,) got stitched up afterwards, and than met him at a bar/lounge later that night and got into a fist fight with him. That's a fighter's fighter if I've ever seen one.

Greb demonstrated greatness in his era, and would in this one as well. He would not have amassed the number of fights...but an ATG fighter is an ATG fighter. Greb PROVED his consistency.

A great point. I was thinking that Greb would more likely overwhelm his opponents instead of actually hurting them, leading to a stoppage. Like in the amateurs, you might not necessarily be getting hurt but if you are getting hit with too many unanswered punches it gets stopped.

My boxing is coming along pretty well thanks for asking! Right now with all the final projects and exams that have been coming up I have had to neglect my training a bit but I still have found time to train. I plan on starting in the ami's this summer at 132. I feel really strong at the weight.
