Agree absolutely Teeto! Very hard fights to breakdown. Yeah, my Burley threads don't get much action....oh well. ;)
I'll keep posting to everyone's chagrin. haha.
    Cheers Teeto.

That might be the best insight yet McGrain, i do think that, against a guy with great movement, especially upper body, the jab must be a top class one, very accurate, otherwise your doom may be nigh. Like i said before though, i dont think Monzon will be using the jab like a Vernon Forrest type, boxing. He's constantly hitting you with it and following up with the right, like the Ivan Drago style, 1,2 1,2 1,2!

But Greb may be very awkward for him, as you outlined, and if he gets close, with good footwork, he can win imo. But then again, Monzon's rapier hook and uppercut may do well there, though i do still feel the better inside work is Greb's here

Thanks for your two cents, McVey. I had missed your post. I concur with your reasoning in the fight and agree 100%. The main thing that clinches it for me in determing Greb as the close winner, is the edge Greb has over Monzon in his overall level of competition.

If any of you saw the ageing and very slowed down Emile Griffith catching Monzon with those lead right hands in their second go, and coming close to winning, you'll understand why I would pick hands down the speedy and always coming at you Greb machine.

I never saw Greb take anything like Monzon could dish out. Monzon by near death stoppage. Greb kept his guard too low, and was muscled around on the inside by larger foes. That is why he jumped in and out, and tried to Calzaghe larger fighters. To his credit, it worked a lot. Just not here.

I'm actually kidding. I just wanted to chime in, and voice my opinion regarding fighters you don't have footage of. I still say you can't judge head to head without seeing someone fight. Call me crazy, but that is still how I see it.

I'll stand by my prediction for this fight until someone shows me significant film footage proving otherwise.

Greb's rusume may be better than most anyone, and that may well mean that you have to assume he has some chance against anyone. I just can't honestly give an opinion on how he matches up with someone without seeing him on film.

I see Greb outworking Carlos, based on the fights against Tunney he handled Taller men pretty well, I see it aa a close fought UD for Harry

I never saw any Greb at all outside of him doing some shitty exercises on film. That's why I think this topic is essentially rubbish.

Emile's decline was gradual-I wouldn't say he was "very slowed down" at all. Granted, his speed & reflexes were slipping compared to his prime, but he was able to adapt as a formidable middleweight during that period. Longevity was one of his strengths.

Granted, Monzon was not at his peak for these fights either.

I do agree that this topic is somewhat "rubbish". I don't favor any great middleweight from the more modern eras if you put them in Greb's backyard. If you put Greb in Monzon's era, he would probably look like deer in headlights. T'was a different game, a different sport.

Whenever I see a Harry Greb post I have a difficult time responding due to the fact I've never seen a single film of him in action. All I have to go on are articles from his time and the opinions of of others who knew someone who saw him way back in the day. It would help if there were any films of him which would make it much easier to judge him and rate him against other great MW's. Based on what I've read I would say that he certainly is one of the best but I would love to see some film clips of him actually fighting. It's as frustrating as hell to try and rate him against other all time great MW's when I don't even know what he looked like in action! Until some rare clip(s) of him are found and made available to the general public I can't answer any hypothetical matchup questions regarding Greb. Anyone else out there share my frustration regarding this issue?

Monzon was smart enough and dirty enough in his own right to use his height and long arms to find a way to decision even Greb.
