    True

I feel Spinks' southpaw stance, movement, defense, and right jab would give Floyd a lot of problems. I think he would win a close decision.

I get ya. Level of competition is a critical indicator, but just going by what they "appear" like, I'd say Whitaker didn't appear as good as his light weight self when he moved up compared to Mayweather, who even at the lower weights had some struggles.

Spinks would do well against alot of fighters. He can win 5-6 rounds off whitaker too. Vernon Forrest vs pernell whitaker, now this is a fight i would love to see somone analysis. The taller, rangier boxer-puncher at 147. To me, hes like a poormans hearns.

Terry Norris is another fighter that i believe would have a great tim against defensive fighters or slick boxers. If you dont have the power to hurt terry, hes gonna be all over you. If terry and pernell would have fought between 95-6, i would comfortable pick norris to ud him.

Cory Spinks vs de la hoya, may 2008! Make it happen, i will gladly pick spinks to ud him.

    Another GREAT fight:good

I think this deserves it's own thread. I too would love to hear analysis on this. Could Pernell overcome Vernon's size and reach or would he be in over his head?

If he beat Cotto or Williams, would you put him ahead?

Not quite. Whitaker is #19 on my list, Mayweather is #33. If Floyd beat Cotto, Williams, and 1 more world class fighter then he would be right there though.

Nobody knows the name Pernell Whitaker in the Philippines during his heyday. People here are concerned more about Tyson, SRL,Hagler, Dodie Peñalosa, Bowe during those time. But Ive seen him fight and I'm not impressed. By comparing now their styles and accomplishments then I have to say YES to the topic.

Either one of them, even or arguable either way. Both and yes.

He wont fight Williams tho....its a fight Floyd just cannot win.

Yes sues2nd, majority of Filipinos are not really concerned with fighters who are not Ko machines and have a defensive style. Even Pbf gets a lot of heat from people here for his fighting syle until their opinion changed win he ktfo Hatton.

Common misconception with those that have never really witnessed Pernell Whitaker fight in the ring. He didnt have a defensive style at all....The man regularly threw 1000+ punches a fight, had one of the best jabs the sport has ever seen, attacked from just about every angle and was actually a VISCIOUS body puncher. If he had power, I dont think it would have been fair...

Him being the best defensive fighter ever (barely arguable...) makes people think of him as that first...but his offense was just as good....part of the reason his defense was so great because he would actually stand in the pocket and unleash multiple combos...all while dodging and blocking his opponents combos.

Simply beautiful if you ask me.

But to each his own I guess!!!

(tho you should go back and check out some of his older fights...)

That's a shame really, though it confirms what I have already surmised. However, that is not an excuse when you have access to records and forums such as these. You say you are not impressed? Does it impress you when the boxer outpoints the slugger easily, or does that go unnoticed because you simply choose to ignore it? Not trying to egg you on, but you say you are not impressed by one of the 20 greatest fighters who ever lived simply because he lacks power. Do you equate greatness to power?

Thinking about it, who were the guys Floyd fought who were contenders for the p4p title? I can't think of any. With Whitaker there was Chavez, Nelson, Mcgirt and De La Hoya. Whitaker against prime Oscar was better than Mayweather against old Oscar, Whitaker was smaller than Mayweather aswell.
