He is not as great as the other two.... but he no doubt deserves to be remembered as the 3rd Sugar. as a lightweight, just toooooo ****ing sweeeet. and as a welter, some very very big wins.
No, I have said multiple times that he is not comparable to the other two in resume, ability, or skill. I don't consider dudes like Sugar Ray Seales to be legit inheritors of the title either. You gotta be as sweet as sugar. And that ain't Mosley.
Nope. The other two Sugars were once in a generation fighters. Mosley is good, but no-one can call him the pre-eminent fighter of his generation. Aspartame Shane Mosley.
I think it's an insult to put his name in the same sentence as SRL or SRR. Mosley has proven time and time again that he has serious limitations in his game. Someone who can easily get outboxed by anyone with lateral movement and boxing skills. He thrives off of guys who stand right in front of him but show a little movement and he's lost.
to me the name sugar should only be given to guys who are complete, guys with that perfect balance of speed, power, chin, heart and technique. Mosley is a definite hall of fame caliber fighter but i never liked the nick name sugar for him.
No. IMO Mosley was never deserving of the "Sugar" moniker, even at lightweight. Shane was always more of a power hitter than a fluid fighter with sweet moves. Roy Jones Jr should've been last generation's 'Sugar'.
To give him the name Sugar , you would have to believe that Mosley is in the same conversation as Robinson and Leonard. Its not close, infact its not the same sport.
Not in the sense that he was never a guy with a "sweet" style like SRR, SRL and SNV, but the guy has had very, very stern competition and carved out a hell of a ballsy career for himself. High action, brute force, speed, durability. A terrific physical specimen, with good boxing skill, although not great. This guy took on everyone no matter how painfully bad the stylistic match-up was for him. He's not on the level of the other Sugars,or close, so no, but talk about being held to ridiculous standards (but he did take the nickname, so, there you go). ...Holdiay, Molina and Leija aren't on any ATG lists I've seen but they're quite noteworthy...I'd say.
I reckon I made that point about two years ago. 2 Sugar Rays and a Sugar Roy. I can't think of any other boxer who has that once-in-a-generation type of ability. Still, it seems like plenty of guys try to take on the Sugar moniker in the hope of it rubbing off on them. Mosley is probably the best fighter with that nickname since the real 2. Of course, SNV is in another category, as we are only really discussing the sucrose type of Sugar. SNV is the only fructose Sugar, which is so much sweeter.
