Has the heavyweight division ever been more exciting?

Agreed with the Wlad part.

AJ's mistake was not succeeding in finishing Wlad in the 5th. He put everything on the line for that finish, but Wlads experience allowed him to escape. That mistake almost cost him, but he prevailed in spectacular fashion, recovering his energy, and finishing it with brutal punches in the championship rounds.

It was a gallant effort put up by Wlad, but I didn't see a particularly rousing fight. I'm reserving my enthusiasm for the moment. I don't think heavyweight boxing is at the cusp of anything too inspiring.

 

One fight and the world is suddenly tilted on it's head.

 

AJ struggled against a washed up punch shy Wlad. Ross Purrity, Corrie Sanders, and Lamon Brewter knocked out a prime Wlad. Yet people are getting so excited over AJ and these other young guys. The heavyweight division is still a joke. Wilder has no skill, AJ has no skill or chin, Ortiz is old and hasn't really done anything. Tyson Fury is a cocaine addict who is on steroids.

The 70's and 90's were the best 2 eras for heavyweights. For the people who say these guys were small then you are proving you don't know boxing. There were numerous guy who were around 6'6 and guess what? The 6'3 or so guys beat the living tar out of them. The taller you get the more stiff you are as a boxer.

That's an exaggeration, and I was responding more to the assertion of it being exciting.

I was leaning towards Wlad by the slightest margin before the fight, but we all knew he was on his way out and that Joshua was coming into his own. This result, while a mild surprise, does not liven up the division because most had already envisioned a future with Joshua amongst the top of the talents at heavyweight. His place at the table was assured.

I argue that the division is not completely out of the woods yet. The talent pool has not deepened so drastically as to warrant this kind of reaction. I admit I would take any combination of Fury, Joshua, Ortiz, Wilder, or Parker, but this because of their names, and not the actual talent involved.

 

Exciting? Both guy throw less than 30 punches per round. The drama played out in a couple of rounds but for the most part it was as boring as hell.

 

I see the damage control squad is already out in full force...
