It's not semantics when you say one thing in one post and then change your mind in the next one....but if you want to knock it on the head for tonight that fair enough.
Don't pretend like you haven't heard my views on Hatton's resume prior to that post. Do you really want to get into a situation where we are picking each other posts to pieces because it could get very tedious? A bit like the whole Hatton debate.
Im tired tonight but I can't wait till this really gets going tomorrow. It seems to me OLDH, Mayweather and Hatton are setting up their own little private club where they only have marquee fights against each other. In Hatton and Mayweathers cases, ignoring the number 1 contender in each of the division their champions in.
It is a boring debate and Im tired of it myself. But this news cannot be ignored. Im more disgusted with Mayweather than Hatton in this case tbh, though the remark he made at the end of the interview pretty much suggests he will never fight Witter which is a disgrace. I can understand his reasons for fighting Mayweather, to avenge a loss really just like I can understand Kessler wanting a rematch with Calzaghe. However, Mayweather has NOTHING to gain from fighting Hatton other than a big day. Legacy wise its meaningless...hes already beaten him convincingly and stopped him. What is the point in this fight? Its not like it was close or super exciting or anything the first time around. Mayweather from what ive seen and heard over the past few months is in semi-retirement mode. He wants to be famous, a big star that transcends boxing now. Dancing with the stars, WWE, 50 cent...pretty tacky stuff really.
Unless I've got things wrong you said history would be unkind to Hatton if he didn't fight Witter. I disagreed. I really don't see how this has got at all complicated?
Nothing but money. In regards to your assertion that history wouldn't be unkind to Hatton, I think it depends on the context. If Witter fights a fellow champion and unifies then the clamour could become unbearable. Bowe I feel, has never really gotten away with not fighting Lewis. Many fans ive spoken to resent him for ducking that fight so blatantly, on the advice of Newman or not. Again however, if Hatton does go on to take fights with oh I dunno Torres, PM and dare I say it someone like Khan or Cotto then people might think he genuinely didn't like Witter and didn't want to give him a pay day but look what else he did...RJJ gets away with not fighting DM I find for the most part, mainly based on his other numerous achievements. It depends on the context. I for one am desperate for it to happen.
I did in that instance but I don't think history will be kind to him anyway for the numerous reasons I have given in numerous other threads that you have been part of. Do you need to hear them again?
Dan,BB. I think we all agree which fights need to happen. Its just when, and in what order, we are disagreeing about?:good
I wasn't suggesting we ignore the news I was merely trying to avert the inevitable debate involving the same tired arguments that Gaz himself said life was too short for. I'm not so sure. I definitely don't want to see Hatton Mayweather 2. Okay. Seeing as you have pressed me on this point, perhaps for want of a better argument, heres my answer. At the moment Hatton has a good resume at 140. At 147 he held a belt which in years to come wont be significant, he also got a severe beatdown at this weight from Floyd. When at 140 he turned down a fight with Floyd which would have unified the division. He instead struggled in a fight against an average opponent in a division he now claims isn't for him. As it stands, without factoring in Witter, I don't think history will be treating him too kindly. If he beats Lazcano & Malignaggi & gets knocked out again by PBF I think history would treat him slightly better than above but not by much given that Malignaggi is nothing special. Factor in the avoidance of Witter in either of those scenarios it worsens the situation given Witter was considered the number one challenger. Happy?
Absolutely-****ing-delerious!! Except the part about not fighting Witter mattering much. You see that as a big strike against, I just don't think its going to be more than a footnote whent they are writing the history books 20 years from now. Good post though and I mean that!
I've done a fair amount of criticising of Hatton in my time but to call him a nobody is taking it a touch far in my opinion.
