Tszyu would've probably won that fight on neutral territory. Hatton fought a very, very dirty fight, and he got away with it on his home soil. A peak Tszyu stops Hatton. He was one of the most accurate punchers I've seen, and his power was something to behold. Hatton eats punches, and without the capacity to maul to close the distance, he gets knocked out.
O.K., stone rose is an idiot, but it's a little bit more complicated than the ref allowing Tszyu to get mauled, because Tszyu very much alowed himself to get sucked into the fight Hatton was was waging - instead of tying Hatton up he would try to infight with Hatton, which he did well I think since this is not at all Tszyu's game and Hatton is a master at it. Tszyu refuses to back down from anything or believe he can lose in any way. Likely niether of his losses would have happened if he fought with his head instead of his balls. Anyway, on neutral turf Tszyu would not have had the chance to be lured into that fight so it would have not happened regardless. Oh and anyone justifying Hattons low blows as 'revenge' is an idiot - both Tszyu's low blows were borderline, accidental, and niether of them hurt. Hatton's was blatant and Tszyu was nearly throwing up. atsch
Well, the fight was pretty close so you could argue that: Hatton was at his peak....hometown crowd...with a hometown ref. Fought a very good nulifying fight, great stamina, got stronger as the fight went on, some questionable tactics for sure but hats off, it will be the defining fight in his career when it's over I suspect. On the other hand, 35 year old Tszyu went 11 rounds ... failed to make weight on first attempt (only the second time in his entire career), gassed after five rounds, threw one of his lowest ever number of right hands ... retired from boxing after the fight ... put Hatton down with an unrecognised bodyshot ... should have been awarded two extra points (knockdown and lowblow penalty)... and fought at a strange time, in a strange town with a hometown ref... After the fight Hatton's own team said, word for word 'We'd been watching him for a while (tszyu) and got him at the right time'. George Foreman also commented on the fight said 'Tszyu wants to throw the right...but the body isn't letting him. That's what happens when you get old.' Tszyu's trainer said in the post-fight conference 'We were an old fighter in the ring tonight. I won't be in Tszyu's corner anymore if he decides to continue on.' So I'd say Hatton doesn't get any better as a fighter than that night...but a younger faster fitter more powerful Tszyu turns up? As a minimum I'd put my money on Tszyu finishing the fight and winning on points, but I'd more expect a Tszyu KO ... hooking off the jab, slowing Ricky down with some bodyshots and putting him away with a big right in the later rounds. Both very good fighters, but no questions in my mind who the superior fighter is.
i would agree that tszyu will be looked on as the superior fighter , because he was, and there's no doubt he wasnt at his absolute peak that night. however to say the man was shot or that it was a robbery is a joke and does both men a dis-service. shot is a term so widely used on these boards, if a fighter is over 32 and loses, he's shot. its a joke.i bet if you asked tszyu who was the best fighter he faced he'd tell you ricky hatton.
Ive watched the fight and got the stats. this is to the time of the round 9 when the lowblow occurred because i feel it was the lowblow that changed the fight. All 3 UK commentators had Tszyu in front by 2 rounds or 1 round. Hatton and Held 48 times and hit Tszyu in the back of the head 23 times. He had been warned twice already by the Ref before the Lowblow so points should have been taking after Hatton hit Tszyu in the nuts. Was also warned for pushing Zoo's face up so prior to the lowblow he had 3 warnings yet no points taken. Tszyu has held on to Hatton 18 times was always trying to push Hatton off even looking at the Ref a few times yet the Ref did nothing. Tszyu had hit Hatton in the back of the Head 15 times and been warned once and he was not warned once for any of his shots that Hatton thought was low. Theres my take and stats up until round 9 when i feel that shot changed the fight aswell as what the ref let go on.
Tszyu was not shot when he fought Hatton, but the difference I noted during that fight was opportunities missed. There were two or three occasions I clearly remember (Don't ask me what rounds, I haven't watched the fight since that chilly sunday morning and look back on it as a disturbing repressed memory) that Tszyu found Rickys chin with sharp, clean shots and stunned him... Only to stand his ground and allow him to re gather himself. I was genuinely surprised, as I had spent many a year watching Tszyu pounce on opportunities like that with hellish abandon. Against many opponents, this Tszyu was good enough to punch the **** out of you, just not against a young, hungry Hatton... Ricky clearly had his hands full with this older version of Tszyu, the middle rounds belonged to him and if memory serves correctly he was leading on 2 scorecards with 1 even going into the 10th... Hattons wide punching style plays right into a prime Tszyu's strengths, I think Tszyu takes a UD with a late knockdown.
Aaargh! I was saying the same thing during that fight, as I mentioned in my previous post, he was clearly missing chanced I'd seen him take thousands of times before. In Australia we never heard that comment, unfortunately... We had to listen to the English commentary featuring some one-eyed **** wit who cheered every time Ricky blinked. The only thing worse than him were the two Australian "experts" who sporadically popped in during the fight to state the obvious... Idiots.
