Was he not 30 pounds larger than the guy he took the title from? Didn't he have a stylistic advantage? Didn't holyfield do the worst thing he could possibly do by trying to rest on the inside? Wasn't it still a very competitive fight? When someone that much smaller with that many disadvantages can give you hell you're not that good
You don't just become undisputed hw champion because you are big. He didn't live up to his potential sure but You are looking for ways to sell the man short. Fact of the matter Holyfield is a bonafide atg. Other than Holyfield at that time what other hw was going to give bowe trouble?
Even with a better gameplan the second time he just squeeked by an overweight Bowe. The third time he got knocked out. Lewis was very often aggressive. An old Holy just wouldn't let him.
bowe is actually quite the opposite, the best and most complete shw with great skill set and physical attributes
I didn't have the second fight that close, the third time holy was dominating until his heart attack or whatever.
Who'd he fight? he should have smashed holyfield to bits, didn't. His title defenses were as bad as Deontae wilder's and then there were the golota fights
All I'm saying is bowe's career=if mike Tyson fought michael spinks in his first title fight, won a close and grueling fight(that should have been and was in reality a blowout), 2 joke defenses, lost the rematch against spinks then gets beat up twice by frank bruno and that's it.
Why should he have smashed Holy to bits when no one else did with any live version? Holyfield may have been a small HW for his time, but he was fukking good and a warrior who wouldn't quit and who wouldn't have been an easy night for anyone. I fully agree with you that the rest of Bowe's resume is thin, but slating him for beating a prime Holy just won't wash. What's next? Putting down Frazier for not beating Ali more convincingly?
No but I would make the same thread about sonny Liston if he needed a trilogy vs Patterson and almost got knocked out by one punch from a severely stylistically and physically disadvantaged opponent who was having some sort of heart attack in the third fight. Same with foreman if he had had huge trouble with Frazier. Not saying bowe was a bum, I'm saying he's not ALL THAT if holyfield had fought the way he did in the 1st bowe fight foreman would have beaten him in their fight as well.
Holyfield went on to batter Mike Tyson twice. Vander was one of the greatest to ever lace em up at Heavy. If he had began his career in the post Lewis era he would've creamed everybody in one sided fashion , Vit and Wlad included. He'd dominate till his 40's coming away with roughly 20k miles on his body clock compared to the 150k mileage he took during the 90's
Yes he is top 5 ATG heavyweight for me as well. Doesn't change the fact that the careless brawling way he fought vs bowe the 1st time he would have lost to foreman, 91 tyson and prime lewis as well. If bowe had improved later in his career I wouldn't be making this thread. But his only big accomplishment remains beating holyfield the first time, for which he is portrayed as a head to head monster, when in comparison foreman and Liston battered Frazier and Patterson great heavyweights who al so had a stylistic disadvantage much easier. Not to mention that Frazier and Patterson were actually much closer in natural weight to their conquerors or atleast Frazier was. So IMO you can't put bowe up there with someone like foreman or Liston, regardless of how great evander was.
So that's why Holy only could narrowly squeeze past a Bowe in poor shape in the rematch? The fought twice when both were in their primes and on balance Bowe got the better of those meetings, since his victory was more conclusive. Fact remains, no one gave prime Holy as much trouble. An older Holyfield had much more success against Tyson, arguably more success against Lewis as well. Patterson on the other hand was brutally KO'd by Ingo and toyed with by Ali when still in his prime, or at least near it. Holy only lost to Bowe when in his prime. You can't compare Floyd and Holy like for like. You obviously have an agenda against Bowe, but you're barking up the wrong tree with the Holy win. And old Tubbs gave Bowe a hard time and Golota beat him from pillar to post. Use that to put down Bowe. Not a great victory.
Bowe`s infighting skill was uncommon for a man 6-5. I can`t think of a better inside fighter that height or taller. Eddie Futch did a fantastic job with Riddick Bowe. It`s a shame that he didn`t have the discipline to be an ATG.
