because evander was a bum on that night too. he was nowhere near the real deal that night and he hasn't been in years, plus he's half a century, plus his speech is slurred. have you seen muhammad ali? did you hear what happened to sugar ray robinson? these were two of the greatest fist fighters to ever walk the planet. if it could happen to them, it could happen to evander, and the signs indicate that it slowly is happening. he should retire.
How many fighters should we urge to retire if we use these standards? Boxing would shut down. This is a damaging sport. Unavoidable.
Has there been a recent interview where Holyfield has expressed that he still has world title aspirations?
that seems to be a blanket statement. there are degrees in everything, and in boxing, if you suffer a certain level of injury, it's time to hang'em up. that obviously doesn't mean the fighter will do it, in fact, in most cases he won't for whatever immediate reason, and in most cases, he suffers when it's all said and done. if a young fighter cut his eye in a fight, I wouldn't ask him to retire. that's evidence of a damaging sport. if an aging fighter continues to fight on as he's clearly mentally and physically declining, no amount of money or greatness is worth fighting on in most people's minds. it's not like any other sport, where aging players can take a lesser role and still thrive. I know you probably think of it as every fighter is risking their life when they walk in there, and I understand that thought process, but if you think of it as walking a tightrope, evander's walking a much more narrow and rigid rope. it's not worth the fall.
Why would you ever say this about the poster boy for all combat sports?!?!? The day SNV retires is the day boxing fades into oblivion. Let's hope that day never comes.
Fair post, but we have to remember the boxers we do not see at the top level. The guys that go into the ring probably knowing they will be KOED for the paycheck.
fair response, but that's an issue of history, almost metaphysics, right? history only really gets written about those who were in view, and who even knows if something is there when no one saw it. kind of like, no one can really know what a deserted area looks like. i'm sorry, i'm blazed, but I hope you know what i'm talking about.
oblivion n. The condition or quality of being completely forgotten: "He knows that everything he writes is consigned to posterity (oblivion's other, seemingly more benign, face)" (Joyce Carol Oates). Boxing - Sugar Niko = ****ed
yea, great point, holyfield has been in wars dating back to like '93 and before, he's taken WAY to may hits to the head, i don't see how any doctor can clear him to fight
