Agreed 100%. Hopkins was struggling to make 160 a decade ago. He's not going there - never, ever. If he had some how hit the Mayweather sweepstakes and got Floyd to bite prior to Kovalev - then he would have starved himself down for the payday if he physically could, but he can no way make that weight. I agree. He's looking at 170 against a 168 or 170 pounder. I think it's ill-advised for almost any feasible option he has. When Hopkins lost to Dawson, he was still competitive despite the clear loss. He was still viable, and then went onto win some fights. But Kovalev really was the first guy to totally shut Bernard down (something Roy and Chad didn't in his other 2 clear losses). It's a bigger lose-lose now for any of those guys than it ever was before. And I think Bernard can beat a lot of those guys, or at least make them look really bad - something he was not capable of against Kovalev. Froch is the only realistic option I think, and as someone mentioned they could do that in Vegas. But will Froch have better paying alternatives as he winds down?
He could beat AA tomorrow , but it wont happen , those Germans need to keep one belt to keep their ratings up.
I know he can't make 160 anymore. The GGG fight would obviously happen at 168, though I'm not sure what Golovkin would gain by fighting Hopkins at this point. If he wins, everyone will just say that he beat up a 50 year old who Kovalev already ruined :think.
Kovalev looked to have outweighed by him by 20lb+ on fight night. He looked so much bigger; arms, chest, back, shoulders etc. Froch is a guy who doesn't go up much more than 175lbs on fight night so in terms of size Froch and Hopkins are quite evenly matched. Froch can also be tagged ALOT and Hopkins can slow the pace down to his kind of fight by keeping range. One thing though, Hopkins has to be much more active. It's not use slowing the fight down (as he did against Kovalev) and then clinching or doing nothing.
Ward still has promotor issues Froch wants a hurrah in Las Vegas to top off his great career. BHop has one fight left in him and showed he still has some tricks left. He also wouldn't be the smaller guy than Froch either and Froch is very easy to hit as well.
funny how you call yourself staminakills yet constantly seek to deride the guy who most proves you right. your closing sentence is nothing short of idiocy.
I'm not sure Froch would take the fight. He's an egotist and the mere thought of losing to the man Calzaghe (who he is bitterly jealous of and always has been) beat years ago, when he was considered ancient back then, would probably be enough for him to say no... Besides, I don't think Froch would be keen on moving up above 168 either, but I could be wrong about that.
A fight with Froch makes the most sense. Hopkins has the style to beat him and the way Hopkins was dominated this weekend Froch might actually think he has a decent chance of winning. The Chavez Jr fight doesn't seem any closer to being made probably due to Arum wanting to extend his contract. So this could be a viable option for Froch to get his last fight in Vegas. It's a tougher fight on paper and a bigger risk for probably less financial gain so it's a secondary option if Chavez Jr can't be made. Another option for Hopkins would be Dirrell as he holds the WBC belt but Dirrell isn't a big name, but it would be the easiest option to win a title at a third weight. I can't see a fight with Golovkin happening at 160lbs. If it does get made it will be at catch weight. Hopkins was 182lbs against Kovalev which is not big for a light heavy but that's still 22lbs of muscle Hopkins would have to lose. That's just too much for a 50 year old to drop and expect a competitive fight. If a fight was to be made at 160lbs I'd expect Hopkins to be dead at the weight and stopped in a one sided fight.
I don't think that he has Ward in mind due to several reasons. 1) I don't think that Hopkins himself likes his chances against Ward. 2) Ward is not much of an actual name at the moment, and probably wouldn't bring the attention that some other fighters possibly could. 3) Ward is having promotional difficulties that keep him away from the ring. 4) I don't think that Ward would agree on coming up in weight for Hopkins. I also don't think that Froch fits the criteria either (although it could be Froch), because Hopkins probably doesn't consider him a "dominant champion". Also, Froch would probably always pick to fight Chavez over Hopkins. The only fighter that I believe fully fits the criteria is Golovkin. 1) Hopkins probably likes his own chances because he is significantly bigger and would have less distance problems than he had against Kovalev. 2) Possibly the biggest name available to Hopkins at the moment. 3) Golovkin is very active, so the activity is not a problem. 4) Hopkins may count on Golovkin moving up in weight to 168 to fight him. Now, whether Team GGG would agree on Hopkins' terms or not, that is the question. Golovkin is fighting Murray next, then looking towards Korobov/Lee winner and eventually the long anticipated fight against Cotto/Canelo winner. Moving up for Hopkins who just lost to Kovalev makes no sense.
Not sure why people think Hopkins can beat Froch. Froch has quite a high workrate, solid chin, good power you could argue that Hopkins has more skill but at 50 surely this will even out. For Froch it would be a good payday in Las Vegas but would mean even less on his resume. Lets face it Calzaghe doesn't get any credit really for beating Hopkins and that was 6 yrs ago.
The only man dominant in the SMW division is Ward. Although Froch is doing well in Wards absence, everyone knows that Ward is the SMW king. A Bhop v Ward fight would be like watching a chess match, unless Ward decides to use his youth and physical advantages and goes more aggressive.
