That's a fair point - however, we're so far over on the other end of the spectrum with the way that fighters would fight 15 and 20 times a year in horrifically grueling fights, and the way that fighters will fight in 2 or 3 engagements every year nowadays.

The basic reality is the lifespan of careers don't last all that far past 30 years old in the present era, persay, regardless either. Sure, I think there's a certain amount of truth to what you're saying, but if we crunched all the numbers I bet we would all be surprised to discover that today's fighters could tolerate alot more punishment than any of us can possibly comprehend. The truth isn't just somewhere in the middle, it swings pretty far in the other direction.

If he was only beaten physically, then he should take the necessary time to get back to 100% (doubt it would be a whole year).

However, his mental shape is more of a concern.

This is, his first loss - and it was a devastating one.

How he responds will be a true test of Miguel Cotto's character, and only Miguel Cotto can honestly determine how much time he needs to bounce back in top form with full confidence. (Whether it be a few months or a few years).

Cotto will return in good form. Boxers take beatings. That's just how it is. Margarito also took a pretty hard thrashing. These guys will be OK. They should just retire by age 35.

He'll be back better than he ever was. A fighter like Cotto will learn something from this loss.
He was mentally beat up, more importantly Cottos legs were gone, think about it he was using his legs twice as much as his fists in the fight and by the 11th was clearly winded, and slowing down, and not fighting the way he should, left that chin wide open, the legs merely followed

Yep. It also depends a bit on the circumstances. For instance, i couldn't blame Cotto for taking a half year off after such a beating. However, i think Klitschko should've immediately looked for an other fight after easy ones like Brewster II and Ibragimov. I think his hardest fight is in training camp: he prepares for 2 months intensely at distant locations.

    "i need a vacation"

give him a comeback opponent who stand off and boxes.

    perhaps quintana again.

i don't think cotto was that damage mentally or physically and its possible he fights by the end of this year but i think it would better to take the time off and fight till next year

He didn't take that much of a beating ... it was a give and take fight ... his nose was the biggest factor in him losing ... once his nose heals - he should be good to go.

I watched the fight again last night. Cotto seemed more worn down as much as beat down. His ring walk back to the locker room afterwards was surprisingly energetic, as if he'd recovered from the fatigue. Now Sal Sanchez vs. Wilfredo Gomez was a brutal beatdown. Gomez came back after 4 1/2 months, fought a couple of no names and became champ again multiple times. Hopefully Cotto has it in him to come back better by years end.

Cotto took a mental beating that sometimes effect the fighters worse then a physical beatdown I say he needs to get his confidence back ASAP

Maybee a fight vs Hatton or Clottey

I noticed that too, so maybe just maybe the beating is not as bad as we initially thought.

That fight was an example of why boxing is one of the hardest sports, period. He didn't just absorb a beating, he sprinted a few miles at the same time.

That ring was HUGE, and he still couldn't keep Tony off of him.

It's Cotto's ego that was devastated with that 1st loss, not his body ! Margarito broke his will to win...

Cotto took a bad beating both menatlly and physically and should not fight again until the begining of next year.
