Both Cotto and Canelo know there is a very good chance GGG will knock them the **** out. At the same time, they both want to be the legit, lineal and WBC middleweight champion of the world. Golovkin is obviously the mandatory. It sure would be hard to negotiate your own destruction.
Roc Nation tried really hard to use an over the weight fight with Andre Ward as a blocking tactic to try to get rid of Gennady and keep him away from Cotto.
Golden boy offered up Lemuix to get Gennady to accept step aside money so Cotto-Canelo could go foreward for the WBC title. You know that they were hoping like hell David would get lucky and land something spectacular.

Well, K-2 didn't fall for the award non-sense and David didn't get lucky, so now they are stuck with him. It would seem there only play now is to use absurd weight stipulations and hope like hell Gennady won't go for it, or just drop the title and run while looking like a massive coward.

Once again, the real crux of the problem here is that Cotto and Canelo both know damn well if they get in there with a healthy GGG, they are getting stretched.
