In the 5th round he came out and jabbed and then followed it up with the left. BAsically Kesslers own formula against him. Kessler not being versatile, was basically broken as a fighter and reduced to throwing hayemakers. When this happened, Slap just did his usual and overwhelmed him completely.
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mo17mo4UB3o&feature=related[/ame] As you can see Slap just brought it back to the basics. Kessler had no answer for his jab, and was virtually tamed.
"how did calzaghe beat kessler?"....because Kessler still has amateurish tendencies....despite all that wondrous "Pro Experience"...lol Kessler was basically reduced from a standard, B level boxer to a C level, desperation punch throwing jobber.... from like midfight on, that's all he did...load up for a big right hand....over and over and over again.... like an AMATEUR.
Kessler was low on gas when he needed it the most, during the mid-rnds. Calzaghe's workrate was greater than what Kessler was ready for, or, at least Kessler wasn't able to meet that workrate with proper adjustments style wise. Had Kessler been in greater shape (without lacking two weeks of tough sparring) we would probably have seen Kessler with a pressure similar to the 12th rnd already during the mid-rnds.
Calzaghe showed heart, versitility and power that night. He boxed well when he needed to and had Kessler in trouble.
Calzaghe is so underrated on these boards. He is an excellent boxer even if people are too ashamed to admit it. This fight against Kessler was proof that he was.
Calzaghe spoiled Kesslers game by tirelessly using his jab and maintaining an incredible workrate, throwing more than 1000 punches during the fight. Sure, Ward has speed, which certainly was a vital asset for Calzaghe. Apart from that, I dont think Ward is anywhere near Calzaghe in terms of workrate, aggressiveness, level of experience nor ring smarts. Calzaghe also took some bombs from Kessler in the early rounds, which I am not certain Ward would be able to cope with. Calzaghe and Ward simply don't remind me very much of each other...
He neutralized his right hand with his chin! Anyways, Kesslers best weapon is his jab, and that doesn't work as well on southpaws, cos it has to travel farther. Nerves (or maybe the lack of sparring) made Kessler tire out by the mid rounds. Finally, Cal had developed a MEAN right jab thanks to all the sparring with a broken left
Outworked and outlanded Kessler. He also showed great speed, movement and defense. Like Hopkins, Kessler confused as the fight went and had no answer.
Most ringside journalists had it 115-113. That's not exactly what I would call overwhelming. In fact in the last round it was Cal that seemed to be overwhelmed.
calzaghe didnt neutralise kesslers rh with just a jab and alot of punches, are you ****ing crazy? calzaghe is a master at what he does he used great footwork for positioning in such a way that kessler was not in line to throw that rh. when he did calzaghe either blocked it or evaded it using great headmovement. the jab and workrate kept kessler confused and didnt give the dane a chance to figure something out. thats why kessler said 'calzaghe is very good at what he does' he did the same to roy jones jr-
Kessler fought a good fight and gave Joe problems but Joe always had that higher gear and was able to adapt a little towards the end. We all know he slapped a little at times due to his brittle hands but he threw in volume and the shots caused all his opponents trouble.
