I have often speculated that he could have done rather well if he had come allong in the last few years.

The guy could have had a field day among the recent crop of beltholders.

I would think so too, the only problem I see is the size of the guys now. I have a video of Leonard/Duran 3 and the undercard. I have been watching it over and over. Mercer fights Ossie Ocasio and Morrison also fights, although I forgot who Morrison is fighting. Morrison and Mercer were both 6-1 and 6-2 and they weighed 215 about. If they fought now against the Klitchko's can you imagine how small they would be? I was surprised how small the heavies were even in 1989. Tyson was about 215 also.

I like watching Ray mercer fight. in his prime he was very tough and a pretty strong hitter. but he certainly did not get in very good shape. he was a pretty dirty fighter too, I guess that helped him in MMA though..
    haha :p

:tongyeah mercer was entertaining but not always in great shape. the mercer from morrison, lewis and even holyfield could be a champion today and competitive in most eras

If Mercer had had better training & Mgmt, he could have been 10 percent better,
which would have moved him to a higher level.
