Only issue I have is HOW Roy got the WBA and IBF belts and also had the WBC handed back to him. Those were literally meaningless trinket belts that in reality belonged to other people. If he had won them outright then it would be a totally different story.
Call me crazy but I have seen fighters do worse and the referee not disqualify someone and take a point or even two before disqualifying someone. And you are correct about the acting job of Griffin it was a joke. I hate when fighters do that. Hopkins made a second career doing it and it is cheap and takes away from the fight. :good
I just told you he won two of them outright by beating Tarver. Roy was the challenger for those belts.. If you want to call DM the man before then, that is fine with me, but I disagree.. Any claim that Roy never fought and won the right to be called the man should be dismissed after he beat Tarver.
Roy Jones, WBC, Super WBA, IBO , Ring Magazine LHW Champ, Rated #1 P4P Silvio Brano WBA LHW Champ Julio Gonzalez- WBO LHW Champ IBF- Vacant title, that Clinton Woods and Glen Johnson failed to claim. Rico, this is what it looked like after Roy beat Tarver.. I know you aren't fond of Roy, but is he not clearly the man at LHW here?
I am talking well before that when they were literally seized from DM before he had a chance to defend them.
I am not sure exactly as to why DM was stripped so i wont comment.. but i know Roy won them and defended them many times...
yes, here's the quotes from boxrec on why dm was stipped of the belts. - After the fight it was reported that Michalczewski's promoter Klaus-Peter Kohl said: "Guthrie is Don King's man and we don't want to do any business with him." Kohl has said he is hoping an arrangement on juggling title defences can be worked out with the WBO and WBA. (Sources: Glasgow Sunday Mail, June 15, 1997; The People, June 15, 1997) - Thus, the IBF title was declared vacant. - Immediately after this fight, Michalczewski also was stripped by the WBA for holding the WBO belt together with the WBA belt. (Cyber Boxing Zone) jones unified the three major belts but dm clearly had a rightful claim to the title.
exactly. it was painful listening to the lead up to the dm-gonzalez fight with some writers saying that dm (48-0) was attempting to tie maricano's record and also trying to tie joe louis' record of 25 title defenses with his wbo belt. i wanted to vomit. he wasn't even the best fighter in his division.
I don't know how this stupid "Mind Reader" clown can even carry on posting . After being owned and severely schooled on the JOKE that is The Ring title, being the utterly clueless fool that he is, he then drags Calzaghe into the debate and desperately tries to use something, WHICH I'D BEEN EDUCATING YOU ******S ABOUT FOR YEARS, as an arguing point (which also went against his own fukkin argument along with backing up mine) in some hopelessly stupid weak attempt "expose" my completely non-existant agenda :roflatschatsch. Talk about double standards. This stupid ******* was under the illusion that *I* was a fukking fanboy as well as him . He made what was probably the most stupid attempt to make a point in the history of this forum :rofl:deal. What a complete fukking FOOL! COMEDY fukking GOLD . It's also hilarious how each time butt-hurt Mind Reader loses and gets owned, he has to turn to his boyfriend "Loudon" for help and reassurance like the lost defeated weak fanboy pu55y that he is. LOVE IT!
I have seen how in arguing in other threads, your answer to this if arguing against would likely have been, why didnt Roy stay at HW if he wanted to fight Tyson? Tarver wasnt a big fight compared, and if Roy had of wanted to fight Tyson he wouldnt have wanted to go over old ground and stayed at HW to force a Tyson fight. Now I dont neccessarily agree with any of that, but that is how you have argued things before with other fighters when fights didnt happen and there had been talks by both camps. See Loudon it works both ways
You can have title holders and man who beat the man in the same division. Froch is a title holder and got beat by A Ward. Or if you say title and P4P fighter owning a belt then just look back to when Hatton beat Tsyzu and Mayweather won a title at the weight (WBC). Mayweather was a top P4P fighter, but Hatton beat the man. what Jones won against McCallum was the int WBC title, which is still winning a title fight to be fair, but McCallum had lost his title to Tiozzo who I think vacated after a defence and went up to CW, so Roy/McCallum wasnt for the full title that night, where Roy would have been awarded if the title was vacant, which I think he was.
This is one thing that we can agree on. It was a joke that the WBC belt was handed back to him. After he vacated to fight Douglas, Nunn and Roch fought for his vacant title, and when Roch beat Nunn, he should have been declared the new WBC champ. I believe that Roch ended up suing the WBC for a lot of money. I think that was disgusting. I've also agreed with you before regarding DM being unfairly stripped of his titles. But those titles weren't just handed to Roy. He beat Lou Del Valle and Reggie Johnson, and they were both good fighters.
he got caught doping so i have no respect for him and would expunge him from the greats list, sorry you don't get rewarded for cheating. You wouldn't reward a guy who stuff his glove with a horse shoe and claimed to be the hardest puncher would you? So why reward a guy who got caught taking peds that enhance speed and endurance which were his best traits. Now some people might say, well he only used drugs when he got old, yeah sure he did, like a-rod right. Would you say well margarito only loaded his gloves when he got old, or mr horse shoe in my glove only did it because he was old. If he was too old to fight then retire.
Things in boxing aren't always straight forward. We've got evidence that states Roy met with Mike and they were both up for a fight. We've seen links to support that, and Alton Merkerson says that Roy kept his Ruiz physique in the hope of getting Mike. If you look at zod's links from page 22, post 320, you can see how complicated it was to make a fight with Mike at that point in time. There were lots of things happening when both fighters met. Mike was up for an assault charge. He'd filed for bankruptcy. He'd separated from Shelly Finkle. He'd been out of the ring a year. He didn't have a trainer. He was embroiled in the middle of a lawsuit with King for $100M. Meanwhile, Tarver was baiting Roy at every given opportunity. So he took the Tarver fight. After the Tarver fight, Roy told Larry Merchant in his post fight interview, that he wanted a mega fight with Tyson. But of course, he ended up taking the rematch with Tarver, because people wanted to see it, because of the controversy surrounding their first fight. Now, I can only assume, that after the first Tarver fight, Mike still had a lot going on around him, and the Tarver fight was there to be made. I know that Roy still spoke of wanting Mike after his rematch with Tarver. But his losses to Tarver and Johnson, and Mike's loss to Danny Williams, killed the fight from ever taking place.
