wow thats interesting. i have been a huge boxing fan since the early eighties. i have to admit there are not alot of fighters today that i get excited about. as far as pay per views go the ufc offers alot more bang for the buck. it makes you wonder whats down the road for our great sport!
Well the UFC gurus have admitted to stealing what they thought were the good qualities of boxing and starting from there, boxing should start trying to steal the good qualities from the UFC and go from there. Such as bonuses based on performance, considerably better matchmaking in an effort to avoid dull fights, a much higher emphasis on the promotion of the undercards and so on and so forth.
When an undefeated power punching knockout machine american is fighting the undefeated american champion for the middleweight championship of the world and their hardly a blip on the sports radar. Yes.... boxing is dying to the UFC with white americans (and slowly the hispanic community too, believe me) Where im from, 8 years ago you could find at least 3 or 4 boxing magazines in the sports section of Hastings.... now i am lucky that the Ring is the only one left, with i swear to god 5 or 6 MMA magazines. The kids here.... talk about UFC, not boxing..... the highschoolers talk about UFC, not boxing.... the people at my MOS school knew UFC, not boxing.... That being said... boxing is hanging in there better then i thought, and we can still right the ship.... I remember when people were saying "Boxing wont have any more stars when hoya is gone" and look.... the biggest fight of the year and one of the biggest fights period is between two boxing stars that are alive and healthy in the era after oscar... cotto and pac. Theres a lot of good we can take from this.... a lot of the people at my MOS school liked UFC more, but still knew who pac and mayweather were. Boxing needs to UP its game.... and it can compete. I believe it has, and it needs to continue to do so. UFC grabbed mainstream by the throught because they are packaged great.... and they PUT themselves out in the mainstream NON STOP. Im happy to say im proud that boxing has def stepped up its game because of the UFC.... we never used to have countdowns, never used to have 24/7's.... and now have three names known to the public instead of just hoya... pac, mayweather and plenty have heard of cotto on the eastcoast... and also a lot of people know who hatton is. But boxing needs to continue this progress and build on it. They must be smart about this.... god i wish i was a billionair i would do everything i could to do what it takes lol.
I'm getting sick to death about this boxing dieing rubbish, it will never die, UFC will die mark my word and there fighters are the one's that will kill it, boxing would be great if it had UFC model of all the fighters and they control everything they do but it is impossible and never happen and MMA, UFC when all its new fans start following fighters not just let see some body get there head kicked it, it will join the real world, like boxing when fans demand this and that and fighters say I won't more money and I not going to sign my name and all chance of making money outside the ring to you a promoter.
In boxing, there are different promoters, organizations, networks and so on and so forth. In the MMA world, there are only two companies who control everything in North America. Strikeforce and Zuffa. Nobody will bite the hand that feeds in a pseudo monopoly...so while some fighters in the UFC will demand more money (and some will be granted), nobody is going to talk out of turn at the risk of getting exnayed from the American fight scene. That's how it goes.
I remember when people said on this site back in 02 and 03 that MMA would never become a mainstream sport, and would never become bigger then boxing. MMA and UFC are here to stay... believe me. It has a HUGE following based on the fact that now highschool wrestlers now have an outlet to go into after highschool and college. My hope isnt that UFC will die, because it wont... my hope is it doesnt get much bigger.
I do hope that another organization comes along that can continue to water down the market... again, just like boxing, the more champions, divisions, companies, ect... the more it will hurt mma, and yes... i do hope for that.
Bingo. It's not going anywhere. What we need to stop doing is hoping that it will die, it's wasted effort and wasted energy. Instead we should accept the fact that it's here and start taking what they do well and incorporating it into our own game. A promotion run as well as the UFC with the superior resources and support of a network like HBO is a very very well run place.
It won't ever happen soon. Zuffa has done a very good job killing off anyone who can come close to competing with them, mainly because a)they run their business very well and b)their smear campaigns can't be touched. The market will never get watered down and if another promotion DOES open up, the talent level is still growing so it's not like 3 promotions would be stretching for talent.
I said it before, and I'll say it again: MMA is just glorified street fighting. If I wanted to see that ****, I'd go back to drinking in biker bars! If boxing ever does truly die, it won't have much to do with MMA. Boxing has a very diverse fan base. When was the last time a former president visited an MMA fighter, and wished him well? When was the last time a presidential candidate ask an MMA fighter to participate in their campaign? Both those things happened with Jermain Taylor and Kelly Pavlik. MMA's fan base consists at leat 90% of young white redknecks. It fills the void in their lives that opened up when they found out rasslin' ain't real!
I am not comparing poker and mma in the sense of who's losing fans to what . I'm comparing it based on the fact that poker 2 years ago was so big, you couldn't turn on a tv and not see a commercial of all this new poker shows. The way poker exploded overnight is somewhat the same with MMA. All I'm saying is that, IMO, 2 years from now, MMA will still be shown BUT it aint gonna be as relevant as it was when it first exploded into the scene.
Places like Mexico Boxing won't die quick there loyal to the sport.America, it will. if we take a look at world scene boxing is doin okay. Maybe if they allow boxer to pound a hurt fighter when he's down allow elbows and ****, but no (humping) take a page out of UFC..
Whatever if that's the case. Even if it's not "relevant" as you like to say, It'll still be chewing on boxing and that's still a big deal. My argument isn't that MMA is the new Coke...my argument is that boxing fans who go to sleep at night praying to whatever deity they believe in for MMA to evaporate suddenly can stop because it isn't happening. They're here and until boxing adapts, sees what it does WELL and takes that from it..it will continue to royally bend boxing over and make it humble the old country way.
