I also get the feeling that this whole "boxing is dead" talk only applies to the USA. I guarantee you once the USA have another dominant HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION, the american people, American media and American casual boxing fans will start paying more attention to boxing again
That's a pretty ignorant opinion. Well seeing as how both of those guys have fallen on hard times recently, I'd prefer if any former president stayed away from guys like Anderson Silva and Brock Lesnar and what not. Actually it consists of disenfranchised boxing fans and the youths of today who are turning their paycheck money over for MMA PPVs. Ya know the guys that boxing needs right about now.
Well there's something else. Boxing and MMA are going to start competing soon globally as well. The UFC does outstanding business in the UK and that's a place that was pretty big for boxing. They're also about to poke their head into Mexico where they'll NEVER be able to top boxing...but they can certainly steal some people from us.
All the "boxing is dead" remarks is junk. Boxing isn't dead and there no signs that suggests it's dead either. The reason why UFC is getting a lot of fans isn't Boxing's fault, UFC and boxing don't represent one another. Boxing tends to slow down a few months then comes with a few months packed with major/exciting fights. It's like seasons with boxing and has always been like that, don't understand why some people still can't see this. UFC was talking trash the most in 2007 then DLH/Mayweather happened and it made them look like the fruitcakes they really are. UFC gets a lot of attention lately because it's new and only recently made it on the big picture. It's just a matter of time before it fades. Boxing has always been here and was never threatened to completely stop. Dana White said when DLH retires boxing will die away quickly yet we still have Pacquiao, Mayweather, Marquez, SMW tournament and many others to look forward to.
I have personally been in back alley fights that were more entertaining than 95% of those ball bitin' mma "fights" I've seen!
Yes they do. As someone who had to do a report on it, they do. Believe me when I tell you that the UFC IS most certainly stealing boxing fans. He was speaking financially...and so far he's been pretty right.
With all due respect 4life, to me thats niave.... we had a white, undefeated power punching american challenging the american, undefeated champion at the second or third greatest division in boxing period in Taylor vs Pavlik, and it was hardly a blip in the mainstream... THEN, when the first fight became a CLASSIC... youd think that would wake people up to the rematch. Nope... People need to be 'woke up' to boxing, or it needs to get new fans from a younger generation, because quite frankly... most people just dont care anymore, even if they are american. In fact, most of our stars in boxing are stars because their NOT american... Cotto, Hatton, Pac.... its because the sport is still healthy and strong, but its only a matter of time before UFC gets a foothold in other countries. When i was down in El Centro, basically MEXICO... i was shocked to see that the boxing gym was struggling while the mma gym was filled to the brim. Its slowly changing even where boxing is supposed to be strong... That being said, again, i have hope as boxing is already hanging tougher then i thought... and with the emmergance of golden boy, the future is brighter then its ever been. After all its boxing, and theres nobody in the world tougher.... i suppose i shouldnt expect anything less then a tough fight. And even if things stay where their at, with UFC as the main thing and boxing a close second, with the occasional superfight here and there that does great... im fine with that. Its if UFC gets any bigger and boxing becomes even weaker that ill start to truly truly get pissed (more then i already am lol) But boxing has turned it around somewhat and thats good to see.
Kirk seems to at least get it. He's not oblivious to what's currently going on. Hell there was a dude who posts here who runs a boxing gym who had to add an MMA portion to it in order to keep it open. The whole "This MMA thing is a FAD!" talk is akin to putting your head in the sand and hoping that all goes well. That doesn't work anymore kids. Boxing needs to be fixed and soon or else we WILL fall behind.
You are not fighting my friend, these guys are fighters, lets not forget that, They could not give a **** about UFC and why should they, there getting ripped off blind in the money stakes, it is a joke and it will not go on much longer, silva will be the first, you wait, He is the best in world and making **** money, he will demand more money i bet my ase on that or he will take his ase to RRJ and all the UFC fans will watch this PPV against RRJ and he will make millions, More i one fight than what he will make in 8 to 10 in the UFC and that will open the flood gates and all these staked card will come to an end with the big stars who are the main event demanding top dollar.
Scar, m'man... you are not in touch with eather reality or the american people if you dont think UFC is eather overtaking boxing, and also taking its market. And thats just the way it is. Anyone who exists interacting with everyday people who are into sports and such can see that UFC is not only overtaking Boxings popularity and an alarming rate, becoming more mainstream, and yes... also taking its fanbase. When all the teens are being taken in by UFC, yes.... it is a problem. Most homes dont have the money to buy all big UFC ppv's AND boxing ppv's, so if they have to choose their choosing UFC. I cant even TELL you the last time a boxing match was played at bars around here, do you know what their signs say outside? UFC 101 playing here.... **** like that. When i wanted to watch sam peter vs vitali.... me n miguel went to just about every bar asking if they were playing it... and nobody even knew who the **** we were talking, and asked us if we ment the mma card (some chic.... SOME ****ING GIRL was fighting and they asked us if we ment that) its obvious to anyone who can see reality that no, boxing aint dead... but UFC is def ahead of it and growing, and boxing was becoming irrelevant. I say becoming because as i said, i believe the last few years because of the welterweight division and the competition of UFC boxing has turned it around... ESPN is also doing its part, along with HBO and Showtime. Things are going good now... I can only hope that the two biggest boxing matches of 09 can at least get above 650k buys....
If the promoters, sanctioning bodies, etc got their **** together in the next 2 years boxing would be fine. UFC has a great business model and its going to take something big for it to be stopped. I'll watch UFC but will never follow it like I do boxing. Once Mayweather, Mosley, Pac, Cotto, etc are gone the mainstream wont really know anyone.
Anderson Silva isn't ignorant to the situation. As a headliner Anderson Silva has proven to be a relatively lackluster draw which is why they're sandwiching him with established "superstars" as one would say. He's easily the best fighter in the world but he isn't the biggest draw. If Silva took on RJJ on an independent PPV, The UFC would counteract it with something featuring one of their "name" guys and bury them. That's how it is.
This is pretty much the long and the short of it. A very rational outlook on where we stand right now.
