Boxing is only behind MMA in one country - America. Not one other country in the entire world has boxing behind MMA. I don't dispute the buyrates in America but there is also a lot more money in boxing over in the states too, which is why top MMA draws still aren't making over a million per fight.

Just look at numbers and tell me when boxing has ever been a bigger sport, globally.

MMA is also bigger in Japan, Brazil and poking in on Great Britain as well.

I'd imagine that Tyson guy was pretty big globally. As was that Ali guy.

People can tune in for both, I don't think it's a case of them "stealing" anything. They're on fire recently because they're introducing something new packed with blood and street fighting. That would steal fans for a while but eventually die in the long run. Boxing is a historic sport and it ran into competition far more threatening than this yet it's still there standing strong, we'll have to wait and see if UFC will live long enough and I doubt it. It's just a matter of time before people get bored of it.

It's also worth mentioning that outside of the UFC, which is a brand, MMA is not successful. PRIDE never made a penny in America and went out of business in Japan. DREAM aren't making money. Affliction is finished. UFC bought out it's rivals.

Not one other MMA company has been successful.

I'm in college and have seen 2 UFC PPVs at bars(98 and 100). The business model(short downtime between fights, decent to good action at worst, every fight involves known fighters) is a lot better than boxing. The fans at the arena were there for pretty much the entire undercard if I remember correctly. Theres been too many DLH-Pac type undercards with **** fights that end quick, not only does no one mainstream watch these but they dont do **** in terms of building a fighter up.

That's normal, as I said it's something new and people tend to go all over anything new especially when it provides more blood and street fighting. Boxing has ran into far more threatening situations and has always been here, I don't think UFC will last long enough, we'll have to wait and see. I just think it's a case of something new getting its 15 minutes of fame till it eventually dries out.

Heres the problem... and its been this way since weve ever even had these discussions.

You have one group saying that mma is growing....
the other group said it will never be as big as boxing... who cares

    a few years later

One group said UFC is starting to become as popular as boxing
The other group saying its topping out, its a fad.... its going to die out soon.

    a few years later

One group is saying, um... alright guys now UFC is more popular and more mainstream then boxing... we gotta change something here.

The other group.... no no no, thats just in america, and boxing has is going through a slump, and UFC has topped out, and.... and

I am not trying to be rude but thats how i see it, and its how ive seen it this whole time. Boxing fans arent saying boxing is in trouble to **** on boxing... i love boxing with all my heart and its my PASSION for boxing that moves me to SAY these things, because people with power in the boxing industry needs to know they need to up the game if they are to compete, and i pray to God they dont have the same attitude and viewpoint as a lot of the posters here, as then we ARE in trouble.

MMA in Brazil? Possibly although it's hard to say either way. Japan? No. Britain? Not even close.

Tyson and Ali were popular, yes. Tyson was not a bigger global draw than the Klitschko's are. Ali definetly wasn't simply because his fights were on delay everywhere but America.

Aside from that, they weren't the only boxers around.

    Look mate it is money

    Fighting = money

He will still draw fans who like MMA and boxing fans as well, a Silva v RRJ PPV will do 400 000 IN think and be a sell out, Silva will make 3 to 4 million dollars at least, man what is he making now, **** all and White is making millions and he is not even fighting, look once all the other fighters see this They will be very hard for White to control them, White is a bully and a control freak, look at the way he acted to EA-sports, There a massive company, he is about to see what happens with combat sports, it is dangerous and you can be finished and scared for life after one fight, so getting the most amount of money is number 1 in every fighters life, Mark my word this stuff will start in the next 1 to 2 years. fights doing 500 000 plus PPV and fighters only getting $500 000 for main events that is a joke

They put on a minimum of one PPV at month. Households arent going to buy more than one PPV a month especially with this economy. Eventually there will be competition but right now all thats not UFC is Fedor.

This would all be nice and lovely if the numbers for UFC didn't increase rather neatly over time. They didn't just go 100K to 1 mil buys in a ****ing month, they've grown SUBSTANTIALLY over time since Zuffa took over. It's been a steady growth chart which shows CONSISTENT interest and dedication in a product.

If we just woke up one day and the UFC was selling out, I'd buy it...but they've been doing this for a LONG WHILE and they've got plans to continue to grow. They're not going to ride the wave til it dies out like most companies did, they plan to actually GROW as a company. It's not like our boys in boxing who seem to think stars will live forever and never prepare to replace them.

While neither MMA or boxing will touch pro wrestling, MMA definitely draws more than a boxing event (or your AVERAGE boxing event) in Japan.

It should be clear in the long run if they will grow as they intend to, I personally think it's a matter of time before people get bored of it but we'll see.

Hmm....I think it's close honestly. Considering Japan has never been a big boxing nation, I'm not too fussed about admitting defeat there.

By the way, pro wrestling will feel the heat from MMA more. It is going to suffer as no new stars have been made.
