Well, I don't tend to label boxers as having 'glass jaws'...it's goes from bad to great. An "average" chin is exactly what it says, average...the average being the middle (near enough). I wouldn't label Marquez's chin as average at all. He would not have went 24 rounds with Pacquiao (easiest example) with an average chin. Not many do. Like I said, heart can only get you so far...he tends to go horizontal from clean, hard shots...and the fact that he is never seriously hurt by these knockdowns is testament to his chin. The three (ignoring the fourth) knockdowns he recieved from Pacquiao were all clean, hard, heavy knockdowns...heart, courage, and his ability of recovery all came into play. But if he had an average chin, Marquez would not have went another 23 rounds taking clean, hard shots from Pacquiao. Also, the shots that knocked him down in the Pacquiao bouts were not the hardest shots he took in those particular bouts, in my opinion.
Solid chin. He can be put down but only by very good punches that he doesn't see coming for the most part, and as others have said, his heart and recuperative abilities are first-rate.
It's easier to do this if we have some point of comparison. By way of example: Iron - Mosley Solid - Floyd, Pac Average - Marquez, Khan I would not categorize Marquez' chin to be in the same league as Floyd's chin. I'd put him in the same league as Khan's chin right now (Khan in the Maidana fight). The bomb that Khan took from Maidana in the 10th round is more devastating than the punch that Marquez took from Katsidis in the 3rd round, which knocked him down.
Only diffrence is, Khan was on ***** street and was almost out on his feet, JMM recovers quickly and keeps on fighting back, like in the Kats fight..The most hurt ive seen JMM was in the KD in the 2nd Pac fight, when he got caught by that hard straight left, the same one that knocked Hatton out to another dimension. Having Khan and Marquez chin in the same category is ridiculous. JMM's legs, and balance is what gets him knocked down more than his chin.
To be honest, it seems me and you have a different meaning of average. Khan has displayed an average/good chin once in his career...and that was against Maidana. Marquez has shown to have a solid chin on more than one occasion in his career. Iron/Great - Margarito. Mosley. Pacquiao a step below those guys. Solid - Mayweather. Marquez. At the minute, Khan would still come under the average chin for me. An unreliable chin.
I highly rate his chin. I'd imagine that any boxer who knocks JMM down is probably thinking "oh ****, please don't get up, cuz now I'm gonna get my ass kicked". Seriously, JMM comes back stronger than ever after being floored. It's amazing, and he deserves props as a true warrior with one of the biggest hearts I've seen in the ring.
Yeah, the highlighted is pretty much spot on. Also, about the punch that took Hatton out...Marquez took a very similar shot whilst falling into Pacquiao off balance, yet never went down. His chin is good.
Also, you need to take into consideration that JMM is in fact fighting above his prime weight class, by a division or two.
I can't quite remember, but he took a very hard shot. People usually post the gif whenever the Marquez v Pacquiao threads appear.
Yep, after getting KD'ed, Juan got up like nothing, and started fighting back, and finished the round strong, as where Khan was all over the place, out on his feet.
