I'd say in my many decades of following the sport I am quite good at recognizing talent and understanding a fighters chances going into a bout-an intuition if you will. I am no expert historian but have learned a lot from this site in that regard.
Hi Vast btw! Feel the same as you buddy, ive been watching boxing for almost 30years(mind you i was a casual as everyone who start watching btw).I discover this site...i would say like 7-8 years ago,i became instanly a fan of this site! because of posters on the forum made RBR,it was not just UK bouts(like the one in my own language(french) and got no forum only comments section).
says you i really couldn't give two ****s i e been debating dropping boxing again under the heavyweight watch ie fury wilder joshua boring boring boring
I think my knowledge is pretty decent but always listen to others as i dont think im an expert in any way Some opinons however i can't agree with on here but i love the place never the less
That's about how I view myself, too. I've been following boxing for 90+ years, so I have a lot of experience as a fan, limited experience, in the Army, as a boxer (mostly in the gym). I've attended quite a few live fights during most of those years, and have watched fights in the movie theaters as well. I don't do that much live anymore, except when I personally know one of the fighters (Amateur stuff). Often, someone below the Heavyweight level interests me and I'll follow his or her career closely. I will watch any boxing that comes on my television, any weight class and either gender. I often put out the bucks for Pay Per Views. Sometimes a family member treats me to one of those as well. I sometimes watch YouTube boxing matches, but I don't think they tell the whole story about a boxer. I also have a rather large collection of boxing films, mostly Heavyweights, and many boxing books.
I think decent because i know some information about journeymen and old school boxers that others may not know. I don't really take too much notice of the more obscure boxers from countries in eastern europe and also i'm not too schooled on asian boxers. The current lower weight boxers below bantamweight i generally have less knowledge about. I know the champions but i generally have limited knowledge on the challengers a lot of the time unless they've been in previous bigger named fights. Also, there's people who know much more than me on amateur records of boxers of the past which isn't always easy to find out.
Do you have your tickets before 1952(tv was invented) or else...i will say this:my ancestor brought the first ticket in 6 January 1681 when boxing was first recorded and view every match and have every tickets untill i was born lol
I'd say 3/10. I got in to boxing in a local gym and enjoyed it between 13-22. Still occasionally go for sparring sessions and there is a local in the area I believe will be a world champion. But I read on here and there are so many more knowledgeable people. People talk about fights from the 60's and I've no clue. So I'd say I know more than your casual but a lot less than your hardcore that you get around here. I use the forum as an education tool as much as anything.
Pretty knowledgeable in general about the sport during my years as a fan But not as knowledgeable as I used to be back when I was an avid boxing magazine reader and watched boxing even more religiously I used to enjoy reading about the legends of yesteryear and watching documentaries about them sometimes. In fact, those are actually some of my favourite memories of being a fan. But I'm no historian and I have zero desire to be so or to sit around discussing hypothetical match ups between fighters from different eras with fellow hipsters which can never materialize. To be honest I find all that kind of pretentious. I absolutely love posters like John Garfield and Burt Bienstock who used to post on the Classic though. Those old school guys just had a classiness about them you just don't find anywhere these days.
