I'm a measly 2. I don't know about promoters or history. I've got safe pa to thank for my love of carnage. I started really getting into boxing by watching it with him. His brain is an infinite archive of sporting & miscellaneous facts. I have had the benefit of his vast expertise, he explains everything. Everyone needs a friend like him (unless you are that friend) Oh and I've been to watch live. Love it. :happy :bbb
Ive obviously joined this thread VERY LATE, but i'd like to just let the other classic posters rate me, whoever thinks they know me well are welcome. I think i have a decent knowledge of what i know and the subjects i find most interesting personally in boxing, and ive tried to broaden my horizons as much as possible since ive been on ESB. Some are much more knowledgeable though here, im left in some posters' dust here i must say...
I think you're a good poster and you have good knowledge, but it's not a competition so don't fret is some people "leave you in the dust", as you put it. That's one of the things I like about this forum; there are very few big ego's in here. We're all here to enjoy ourselves with like-minded fans, and perhaps learn a few things along the way.
Yep. Started back there in February of '03. It was a great place, until some 'elite' posters took it on themselves to systematically destroy it. I don't recall your name...when where you there, and did you use your current name or post under another?
Okay, why not? Boxinginsider took over from boxing.com, which was probably the premier boxing site at the time - the ESB of it's day. Boxinginsider was a big site, with the likes of Steve Farhood writing articles and such. There was a group of about 20 posters who basically got too influential and big-headed and thought they could dictate the way certain things were run over there. Things climaxed when supposedly the site was invaded by a virus, which naturally spread to users computers. I say supposedly because I was not around to see it first hand - I was banned by my boss from the internet for a few months. When I came back, the site that was once flourishing was a ghost town, maybe 10-15 posters were left. Literally 9/10ths of the posters had left to join a rival site called **************, the brainchild of the above-mentioned group of 'elite' (read: popular) posters. That wasn't enough though, and members of the new site would frequently drop in at the old site to troll, spam and generally disrupt things over there. It was just a shambles really...I inevitably joined the new site, but I quickly realised that that was a mistake: there was way too much politics, internal bickering and infantile rants and barely any boxing talk. Of course, things soon went pear-shaped over there as well, and once again an internal rift caused many members to split from ************** to form the BPL, or Boxing Prediction League. I don't know much about the new site, because I got fed up with many of the posters who kept hopping from site to site. To this day I'm angry about it. Boxinginsider was a good site that let certain people get too big for their boots. On the upside, I found ESB so I'm not complaining.
I think it's important to make a distinction between those with a lot of (inside) knowlegde and those who are intelligent to go with it. For instance, a guy like Ron Borges no doubt has a lot of knowledge about boxing, but the fact that he scored Lewis-Holyfield I a draw himself tells me that he's an absolute ****** with the IQ of your average brick wall. And there's historians who don't have Monzon in their middleweight top10 and Fitzsimmons and Corbett in their heavyweight top5. :nut I will say one thing. For all the knowledge that the average poster here in the classic section lacks compared to those historians, they more than make up for it with common sense. Even on knowledge, a lot of posters here go a long way. A lot further, than "boxing historian" Bert Sugar, for instance.
