How do you see Martinez-Golovkin going.

I think Golovkin hits comfortably harder than anybody Martinez has fought too, just to balance that point.

Think people have got a bit caught up in GGGs power, its his skills which are his biggest strength not some superhuman power.

 

Martinez just lost to Burgos, not even close, Golovkin would knock Martinez out cold, no contest!!!

 

It's very interesting fight and one which the styles gel perfectly just looking at one aspect of their games: footwork. Golovkin has superb footwork and is brilliant at minimising his opponent's space, he conserves energy by taking the shortest possible route and very rarely follows his opponent. Golovkin has never fought anyone with footwork (although utilised differently) on par with his own and will he be able to cut the ring off as he normally does when he is getting tagged from the outside? Martinez also has superb footwork but expends a lot of energy when circling the ring and bouncing in and out. He's got a great engine but GGG will apply more intelligent pressure than Chavez who did catch Sergio eventually.

Both can and will be hit in a fight between the two. Golovkin's head is pretty stationary but it is backed up (allegedly) by a rock solid chin, he's also strong mentally after taking a shot. Martinez moves his head but drops his hands which means he also gets caught. Will he drop his hands against a guy as heavy handed as GGG? Maybe, he did against Pavlik afterall but it looks to me that GGG's footwork would get him into position more often and he'd have more success than Pavlik. We know that Martinez has been hit by people of similar power to GGG and not been KO'd (although hurt on several occasions) but we don't really know how GGG will react to awkward, blind punches from unusual angles. We also don't know how an accumulation would effect him, as he will eat a lot of leather in the early rounds from a fresh Sergio.

Golovkin did seem susceptible to uppercuts against Rosado, a bigger puncher might have made him a bit more wary of coming forward as much as he did. Both fighters seem to have every shot in the book too. Both are excellent technicians who really know their style and how to apply it in a fight.

Then there's the experience factor. Martinez has fought at a very high level for a number of years now. He's been in with the best of his division and is seasoned. GGG is still a green professional despite his extensive amateur record. It must be said that GGG has a calm, collected in-ring demeanor that belies his limited pro experience.

Golovkin has never gone into the championship rounds and he's never fought (as a pro) anyone approaching Martinez's level. Martinez is coming off a torrid round against Chavez and a serious knee injury. He's also close to 40.

For me, its about who can stamp their style onto the fight. Martinez will want it at mid-long range and Golovkin will want it more mid-close range. If Sergio is still the same as he was then I do think he has the pop to get GGG's respect and thus stopping him from his relentless advances. I do think that if the knee injury has hindered his movement then he's in trouble though.

Close fight but I'll go with a Martinez decision with maybe a knockdown against him. I can't back Golovkin to beat THE long term, middleweight champion after fighting Ouma, Rosado and Proksa.

 

Babbling on I know but Golovkin's power:

Would you bet against Martinez equalling/bettering Golovkin's results against the same opponents? For me KOing Macklin, Williams, Barker and Dzinziruk is a better display of power than those, admittedly impressive results.

Honestly speaking I couldn't say for sure that GGG hits harder than Chavez or Pavlik do/did. Especially considering the considerable weight differential come fight night of the four guys mentioned.

BTW Golovkin against Macklin or Chavez would be cracking fights too.

Regarding the actual thread topic I think the key factors will be Golovkins chin and Sergios engine. GGG may not have the experience in the championship rounds but hes been in against some top opposition for a long time and you can see how calm he is in the ring, he was born to be in there.

However, we can only go on who they have beaten and how they've looked so I'd have to put Martinez as favourite but I think he has been starting to decline over recent years and think GGG is the guy to show just old he is.

Also I agree with the poster before who mentioned just how small he looked at the weight. 154-160 is where he should stay **** moving up to 168.

 

You could, but on closer analysis I'm not sure it holds up to scrutiny. Only difference is he knocked out guys like Taylor and Miranda who have been knocked out by a few others, and even then he put a lot of gloves on both men. Imposed his size and broke them down. Pavlik punched solid with every punch but he ain't one to spark you out.

Golovkin stopped Ouma who ain't been stopped in about 13 years! The guys tough as nails, to me thats more impressive than putting away Miranda or Taylor for punch power purposes.

Golovkin had 6 clean KO's out of 7 between 2010 and 2011. I'm no stats man but when you're sparking people clean out with regularity, even at that level, it starts to paint a picture.

 

Martinez wide UD - GGG has a great jab and serious power but too static & comes in straight lines where Martinez would be too fast to catch and could force a stoppage IMO

 

Really? I think he cuts off the ring well without wasting energy unnecessarily.

 

I think he is a good boxer and definately carries bombs in his gloves. I think if he fights Sergio i think he will beat him late on.. You got to ask thow why are they avoiding him he is the biggest fight in the division lets be honest Sergio is running scared its pretty obvious and making money out of beating fringe fighting Brits...

Why doesn't Golovkin vacate his worthless belt (regular WBA belt aren't worth a jot) and pursue Martinez through the WBC ranks?

I don't buy this "everyone is avoiding him" line. There are plenty of fighters in the division with a take-on-allcomers attitude, why didn't he pursue a Sturm fight? You could just as easily say GGG is making money beating up LMWs.

Yeah Sergio running scared Look at the LMW he fought! An unbeaten champion in Dzinziruk! Not a basic guy with 5 losses and 2 stoppage defeats.
